WASHINGTON: The death of a woman in Arizona struck by a self-driving car with no human control, the first fatality involving a fully autonomous vehicle, is an event the nascent industry has long dreaded and comes at a sensitive time. Monday's accident involving an Uber Technologies Inc car is shaping up as the first significant test of how policy makers and the public will respond to the new technology. The incident occurred as companies have been pushing for regulatory clearance to offer self-driving car ride services as soon as next year. On Friday, Uber and Alphabet Inc's Waymo car unit had written U.S. senators urging them to approve sweeping self-driving car legislation "in the coming weeks." Automakers and technology companies such as Uber, General Motors Co and Toyota Motor Corp have made substantial investments that hinge on significant revisions to existing vehicle safety regulations written under the assumption that a licensed human would always be in control of a vehicle. Auto and technology industry officials have warned that there could be accidents and deaths involving self-driving cars, but they have said countless additional lives would be saved as robotic systems programmed to obey traffic laws took over for distracted, sleepy or impaired human drivers. Mark Rosenker, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said on Monday the public should not overreact to the Uber incident. He noted that 6,000 pedestrians and nearly 40,000 people die annually on U.S. roads in more than 6 million crashes annually. "This is going to be a unfortunate obstacle that we are going to have to deal with to regain (the public's) belief that these devices are safe," Rosenker said. The incident prompted Uber to suspend all testing of self-driving cars. The immediate impact of the fatality may be to further delay or change a landmark bill pending in Congress to speed the testing of self-driving cars that was already stalled by objections from a handful of Democrats over safety concerns. Senator John Thune, a Republican who chairs the Commerce Committee, said the "tragedy underscores the need to adopt laws and policies tailored for self-driving vehicles." However, two Democratic US senators on Thune's committee, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, said the Uber incident demands a tough response. "This tragic incident makes clear that autonomous vehicle technology has a long way to go before it is truly safe for the passengers, pedestrians, and drivers who share America's roads," Blumenthal said in a statement. The Trump administration has been working to dismantle regulatory roadblocks to self-driving cars, but it has also said it is focused on ensuring safety. "The goal is to develop common sense regulations that do not hamper innovation, while preserving safety," Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said on March 1. A spokesman for Chao had no additional comment Monday. Chao is reviewing a petition that GM filed in January with NHTSA requesting an exemption to have a small number of autonomous vehicles operate in a ride-share program without steering wheels or human drivers. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said Monday in a statement the incident demonstrated "there are enormous risks inherent to testing unproven technologies on public roads. It is critical that pedestrians and drivers are safeguarded." Former US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Monday the incident is a "wake up call to the entire AV industry and government to put a high priority on safety." In September, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a measure that would allow automakers to win exemptions from safety rules that require human controls. A Senate version would allow automakers, within three years, to each sell up to 80,000 self-driving vehicles annually if they could demonstrate to regulators they are as safe as current vehicles. Concerns over the safety of autonomous vehicles

FRANKFURT: Automaker BMW says this year's profits will at least equal last year's results as the company sinks billions into developing electric and autonomous car technology to meet expected changes in how people get from one place to another.
Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter told an annual news conference Wednesday that it expects group profit before tax to be "at least in line" with 2017's record 10.7 billion euros (currently $13.1 billion), which was up 10 percent.
Peter said the company would allocate "an increasing amount" to research and development after spending 6.1 billion euros in 2017, an increase of a billion euros. He said BMW remained financially strong, enabling a record dividend of 4 euros per share.
BMW made 8.7 billion euros net profit last year, up 26 percent. Last year's result was boosted by 977 million euros through the positive impact of changes in U.S. tax law enacted near the end of the year. Revenues rose 4.8 percent to a record 98.7 billion euros.
Auto companies are spending heavily to develop battery-powered cars in order to meet tough measures against global warming and air pollution. They are in a race with cash-rich tech companies such as Waymo and Uber to develop autonomous vehicles, although that technology remains in the testing stage, as underlined by a fatal accident Sunday in Arizona involving an autonomous Uber test vehicle. Companies are also developing digital transportation services involving the use of vehicles for short periods of time when people need them. Together, those technologies could lead to a form of driverless taxis.
BMW recently bought out partner Sixt to take full control of its DriveNow car-sharing company, giving it more flexibility to develop the business going forward.
BMW executives fielded several questions about the potential impact of new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. The tariffs have raised the possibility that the European Union and others might retaliate, expanding the trade dispute to other categories of goods and reducing trade.
CEO Harald Krueger said the added costs to BMW of the steel and aluminum tariffs would be in the double-digit millions. Krueger said free trade had made possible the company's large presence in the United States, where it employs 11,000 people at its plant in South Carolina and from which it exports some 70 percent of the cars it makes, making BMW the largest single auto exporter from the U.S. "Our business model is based on free world trade," Krueger said.

Self-driving car industry faces critical test after first death

BlackBerry must face revived US lawsuit over BlackBerry 10

NEW YORK: A US judge on Monday rejected BlackBerry Ltd's request to dismiss a lawsuit claiming it inflated its stock price and defrauded shareholders by painting a misleadingly positive picture of sales prospects for its BlackBerry 10 smartphones.
While an earlier version of the case was dismissed in March 2015, Chief Judge Colleen McMahon of the US District Court in Manhattan said the proposed class action can proceed now.
She said new information about BlackBerry's alleged conduct had surfaced during the criminal prosecution of an executive at a retailer that sold its smartphones.
The judge also cited a new legal standard adopted by the US Supreme Court that could make it easier for some plaintiffs to show that statements of opinion might be misleading.
Other defendants include former Chief Executive Thorsten Heins, former Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka and Chief Legal Officer Steve Zipperstein.
BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney declined to comment.
A lawyer for the defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The BlackBerry 10 won positive reviews from critics, but never caught on with the public, which preferred Android-based phones and Apple Inc's iPhone. BlackBerry decided in 2016 to stop making its own smartphones.
Shareholders had accused BlackBerry of concealing BlackBerry 10's true sales prospects in public statements during 2013.
The amended complaint was based in part on information from the 2015 prosecution of James Dunham, a former chief operating officer at the retailer Wireless Zone.
That case revealed how an April 2013 report by Detwiler Fenton showing a high return rate for the BlackBerry 10 was based on data sold by Dunham from some 400 Wireless Zone stores.
Dunham pleaded guilty to selling confidential wireless industry information and was sentenced to five months in prison.
McMahon said the plaintiffs have made a "plausible showing" that BlackBerry's public response to the Detwiler report, including that customers were "satisfied" and return rates were "at or below our forecasts and right in line with the industry," contradicted data it allegedly had from Wireless Zone.
She said she would address later the merits of BlackBerry's arguments that its statements were not misleading.

Amazon launches six new fulfillment centres

BENGALURU: Amazon continues to invest in ramping up its warehousing capabilities for the India market as it adds six new fulfilment centres (FCs) for its large appliances and furniture business, the company said Monday.
With the addition of the new FCs, Amazon has a total of 15 FCs for this segment, which e-commerce players have been pushing as a high growth one. Amazon in all has 62 FCs here in India.
The company said it opened the new FCs to meet the rising demand for products like refrigerators, air conditioners, air coolers and washing machines in the summer season. While smartphones drive a major part of sales for Amazon, it has been aggressively driving the momentum around large appliances to fight Flipkart which too is building additional capacity for this category. Flipkart announced plans to set up a 100 acre logistics park to strengthen its delivery infrastructure.
“Our investments in this specialised network will allow us to come closer to customers and offer faster delivery of large appliances and furniture. We have doubled our storage space, delivery station network and cities we deliver to in just this one year to support the growth of these categories. With a total of 62 fulfilment centres having a storage capacity of 18.5 million cubic feet, we continue to have the largest fulfilment infrastructure in the industry, “said Akhil Saxena, VP, India customer fulfilment, Amazon India.
Saxena told TOI last month about launching 15 new FCs to beef up its grocery business under Amazon Now --a separate platform for express deliveries of grocery products. Large appliances are one of the fastest growing categories, the company said in a statement.
“With this infrastructure addition we want to extend scheduled and next day delivery to more customers. We continue to be relentlessly focused on providing a superior experience for customers buying products in these categories,” said Suchit Subhas, category leader- appliances, Amazon India.

Samsung files patent for rollable smartphone displays

NEW DELHI: The consumer electronics giant Samsung showcased its foldable smartphone earlier this year at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Now, it seems that the company is done with that technology and is now focusing on something new and more interesting.
Samsung has now filed a patent for a smartphone display that expands each time the user pull the sides. This means that the user can have the benefits of both a smartphone and a tablet. According to the patent, the device is said to include a support plate, a first display unit, a second display unit, a third display unit, a pad, and a circuit board.

Looking at the diagram mentioned above, DA1 will be the main display and in order to get a bigger screen the users need to grab the device from the left and right side and then pull the smartphone outward. After this, two more display segments will come out which is placed on the either sides of the main display. This will give you a bigger display on which you can enjoy movies, videos and gaming.

As per the patent, the bigger display when not in user will be hidden beneath the main display. So, going by the patent it might be possible that Samsung may come up with a smartphone like this.
We have seen in the past that Samsung keeps on improving its devices. The company introduced the curved screen display back in 2013 with its Galaxy Round device. Then it went ahead and perfected the dual curved display technology. Last year it came up with the infinity display and this year the company unveiled its foldable smartphone. So, going by the trend, it is possible that Samsung might soon showcase the smartphone with expandable display.

Oppo R15 smartphone is likely the 'prototype' of OnePlus 6

NEW DELHI: Oppo is one of the prominent smartphone maker in China and the company is also known for making selfie centric smartphones in India. The company sells its smartphones mostly in China with its branding and many of them make to the other regions under the OnePlus banner. So, recently Oppo launched its R series of smartphones in China, which hints towards the design of yet to launched OnePlus 6 smartphone.
The company launched its R15 smartphone and its design aesthetics resemble a lot to the rumored design on OnePlus 6. Last year the company launched the Oppo R11 and the OnePlus 5 borrowed the same design so it is possible that the OnePlus 6 might look like the Oppo R15.

Talking about the Oppo R15, the smartphone comes with the same iPhone X-like screen notch. It looks a lot like the iPhone X from the front panel but it lacks the symmetry found in iPhone X as the bottom of the device consists of bezel which consists of the soft keys for controlling the smartphone.
The Oppo R15 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor paired with 6GB of RAM. The smartphone houses a 3,400 mAh battery and comes with dual rear camera setup with 16MP and 20MP modules. The Oppo R15 features a 6.28-inch OLED display with 2280×1080 pixel resolution. Certainly, the innards of the OnePlus 6 will be different from that of the Oppo R15. As the company has already announced that the smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 processor and will have an alert slider. But, it is definitely possible that the smartphone will look exactly like the Oppo R15.

loses Bitcoins worth Rs 41 Lakh

NEW DELHI: Think twice before you invest in crypto currencies. Delhi Police is investigating a case of Bitcoin theft where a woman lost around Rs 41 lakh after her wallet and account was allegedly hacked by unidentified men. The woman has claimed that there are more victims who might have lost around Rs 50 crore.
The woman, a resident of Mayur Vihar, has approached the economic offences wing with her complaint. She first lost around 6.5 Bitcoins worth Rs 6.5 lakh to hackers and lost another Rs 35 lakh to cheats who claimed to help her retrieve the amount, she claimed. The cyber cell has begun a probe.

She told cops that she initially invested around 0.4 Bitcoins with a company in February 2017 after being introduced to it by her friend. The firm had organised seminars in five-star hotels to lure investors. In May 2017, she again invested in the company after her mutual fund policy matured.
“I invested all my savings in the company along with my friends and family members. The company owners assured me returns of 12% monthly on my investment,” the victim said. She got the returns till August 2017 in her bank account.
Since August, the company started giving returns through its own ‘crypto currency’. This attracted protests from investors, including the victim, who demanded returns in Indian rupees. Sniffing a fraud, she then asked the firm to return her invested money.
In October 2017, she was contacted by the firm who asked her email ID and password registered with the company’s website so that her return could be processed. However, she had no idea that she had walked into a trap. “On November 8, 2017, my blockchain wallet was hacked, which had 6.5 Bitcoins. The hackers also deleted all the data on my email ID,” the woman said.
Four days after losing her Bitcoins, Shah sought the help of an acquaintance who claimed to help in retrieving the lost money by ‘earning’ Bitcoins through binary trading. The fraudster listed websites like ‘FXoptions.com’,‘Cryptominers.com’,’coinspaceprofit.com’ and ‘24options.com.’ to the victim. She believed the men and paid Rs 35 lakh, she said.
“After getting the amount, he started complaining that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer and cannot meet anyone. Later, he stopped responding to our calls and other communications,” she said. Realising she had been duped, she finally approached the police.

Indian professionals in the US take out rallies demanding end to green card backlog

WASHINGTON: Hundreds of Indian professionals held peaceful rallies across the US, demanding an end to the long and massive green card backlog by eliminating arbitrary per-country limit regulations.
Indian-Americans, most of whom are highly skilled and come to the US mainly on H-1B work visas are the worst sufferers of the current immigration system which imposes a seven per cent per-country quota on allotment of green cards or permanent legal residency.

As a result, the current wait period for Indian skilled immigrants for green card can be as long as 70 years.
The rallies, to urge lawmakers to support to end the per-country limit on legal permanent residency was held over the weekend in Arkansas, Kentucky and Oregon.
"As awareness builds on this topic among the American public and lawmakers, they are joining the chorus asking for reform to address the discriminatory green card backlogs impacting employment based green card applicants from India," said Seattle-based GCReforms, a recently created organisation by Indian-Americans for this purpose.
"The attendees spoke in one voice and the message was clear it is unfair to discriminate against applicants from one country due to arbitrary per-country limit regulations. These limits were put in place when Lyndon Johnson was president of America and before even the first handheld calculator was invented they do not work in this era," a media release said.
GCReforms expects to continue raising awareness in several other states in the coming weeks, and has been steadily gaining support from politicians, chieftains of business and the American public.
In the House of Representatives, remove per-country limits has been the best biggest bi-Partisan support in the current congress via Kevin Yoder's bill HR 392. Three in four congress members supports this issue, yet the bill has not been brought to vote, GCReforms rued.
"It is high time Congress, Senate and White House addresses the green card backlog impacting 300,000 high-skilled immigrants who have made significant contributions to the US economy," GCReforms said.
Many Americans joined 'Break the Backlog Series' at Arkansas by GCReforms, 'Green Card Backlog Round Table' discussions in Bentonville, Arkansas to know more about the employment based green card wait times. Centerton Mayor Bill Edwards addresses the gathering and acknowledged the contributions of the Indian immigrant community.
Over 300 people gathered to show support for Indian high-skilled immigrants who are stuck in the green card backlog during a campaign 'Break the Backlog' event series on Saturday at Capital building in Frankfort, Kentucky by GCReforms.
This is the most important issue for the Indian diaspora in the US, as it impacts many physicians, engineers, teachers, nurses and medical professionals, according to a press release from GC Reforms.
Many of these high-skilled immigrants who came to the Kentucky area for technology and other jobs are stuck in a potentially decades-long green card backlog.
The Nebraska event was addressed by Congressman Don Bacon.
"Indians immensely contribute a lot to our Omaha community and our Nation, both culturally and by benefiting our economy through their hard work and efforts in education. Today they shared with me many of the shortcomings of our H-1B visa programme and the impact on their families and local employers. I look forward to being a strong voice in tackling these problems," he said.
Over 200 residents came together to raise awareness about the issue faced by high-skilled Indian immigrants and their families in Hillsboro, Oregon this Sunday at the event Break the Backlog event series by GCReforms.
Commissioner Malinowski, Indian community leaders Jaisen Mody, who is a General Manager at PGE, W Krishnamurthy spoke at the event on the need for fairness for all immigrants irrespective of where they came from.
According to Senate Republican Policy Committee, every year the US on an average allocates some 50,000 green cards through lottery for people from countries who do not get an opportunity to come to the US through the merit-based employment visas.

New outsourcing bill tabled in the US seeks to stop call centre jobs coming to India

WASHINGTON: A legislation has been introduced in the Congress that would require call centre employees in countries like India to disclose their location and give customers the right to ask to transfer their call to a service agent in the US.
Introduced by Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown from Ohio, the legislation also proposes to create a public list of companies that would outsource call centre jobs and give preference in federal contracts to companies that haven't shipped these jobs overseas.

The bill also guarantees US customers the right to ask to transfer their call to a customer service agent who is physically located in the US.
For far too long, US trade and tax policy has encouraged a corporate business model that shuts down operations in Ohio, cashes in on a tax credit at the expense of working Americans, and ships production to Reynosa, Mexico or Wuhan and China, he said.
"Jobs at call centres are some of the most vulnerable to offshoring. Too many companies have packed up their call centers in Ohio and across the country, and moved to India or Mexico," he said.
Brown said the constant threat of outsourcing hangs over workers like Renee Rouser of Youngstown, who he talked with last week. Renee has worked at a Youngstown call center for 13 years and knows call center jobs are where people build careers.
"So many companies wouldn't be able to function without their customer service staff. Ohio workers like Renee contribute to their businesses and bring ideas to make it work better. We need to value their contributions not end their careers and ship their jobs overseas," Brown said.
According to a study by the Communications Workers of America, the largest communications and media labour union in the US, India and the Philippines are the top two destinations for US companies off-shoring call center jobs.
American companies also have opened call centers in countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, China and Mexico, the study noted.
According to National Association of Software and Services Companies estimates, the Business Process Management industry in India is a global leader with revenues of over $28 billion annually.

'world’s smallest computer' IBM

NEW DELHI: IBM has unveiled the world’s smallest computer at its ongoing annual conference IBM Think 2018. The computer is a small chip of x86 from 1990 and the company claims that it is a very powerful chip. The company aims it to be the data source for blockchain-based applications.
In an official blog post, the company said, “The world’s smallest computer is an IBM-designed edge device architecture and computing platform that is smaller than a grain of salt will cost less than ten cents to manufacture and can monitor, analyze, communicate, and even act on data. It packs several hundred thousand transistors into a footprint barely visible to the human eye and can help verify that a product has been handled properly throughout its long journey.”
As explained by the company, the cryptographic anchors allow blockchain to be in used in products like a bottle of wine or a chocolate box. IBM adds that these crypto anchors work as secure digital watermarks and will make product counterfeits a thing of the past.
Along with this, the company also aims to keep the manufacturing cost of these tiny computers as low as 10 cents. With the minimal production cost the company claims that there could be widespread adoption of the same. Arvind Krishan, the head of research for IBM feels that the onset of crypto anchors are just the beginning.
Cryptographic anchors will be used in tandem with blockchain's distributed ledger technology to ensure an object's authenticity from its point of origin to when it reaches the hands of the customer, IBM said in a statement.
"These technologies pave the way for new solutions that tackle food safety, authenticity of manufactured components, genetically modified products, identification of counterfeit objects and provenance of luxury goods," it added.

How to manage storage on Gmail

Gmail is undoubtedly one of the most used email service today. And while most of us may find it indispensable and immensely useful, there is one problem that mostly everyone encounters with it -- managing storage. It’s hard to keep a track of when we end up using the 15GB of storage space that it offers, and the next thing we know is Google asking us to pay to get more storage. If you have been considering to do that, wait before you read this, as here we tell you ways to manage the limited storage on Gmail more effectively.
Step 1: Open Gmail
Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see how much storage you have used. Select ‘Manage’ written below it.
Step 3: On clicking it, you’ll be taken to a page called Drive Storage. Here, you’ll see a pie chart of how much storage you have used and various plans to buy additional storage.
Step 4: Press ‘View Details’ below the pie chart.
Step 5: On doing this you’ll see the exactly how much storage you have used in Google Drive, Gmail and Photos.
Step 6: Select the option of ‘Learn More.’
Step 7: This will take you to a page called Google Drive Help. Here you’ll find a number of instructions on how you can manage your storage.
Step 8: If you have too many items in your trash then go to drive.google.com. After this, click Trash on the left. Click 'Empty Trash' one you are sure that your trash folder doesn't have any files you would want to recover.
Step 9:Google Drive Help also has a link Under the section ‘Option 1: Clear Space’ which lets you see which of your files take up the most space. On seeing this list you can decide which files are not of your use and delete them.
Step 10: If your photos are taking to much storage, then go to ‘Learn more about photo storage’ in Google Drive Help. You’ll be taken to a new page which will have the links to adjust the quality of images saved.

How to retract Facebook apps' access to your data

Such has been the clamour around Facebook’s recent Cambridge Analytica controversy that people are furiously searching for ways to distance itself from the social media platform. WhatsApp’s co-founder even tweeted about how everyone should delete their Facebook account. Day before yesterday one of the top Twitter trends was #DeleteFacebook.
While we aren’t sure the recent controversy calls for drastic steps such as deleting your Facebook account but to each his own. However, if you don’t want to delete your account and yet make it more secure there are certain things you can do. If you feel vulnerable about your private data being leaked – not by Facebook – but by third-party apps on the social network, you can follow a few tips.
Most Facebook users have given apps the access to their privacy data and information. Be it games like Candy Crush or entertainment apps like BookMyShow, the access is given to them. However, this access can be revoked.
To state the obvious the first thing to do is to remove the app from your Facebook account. One can do this either through the Facebook site or the app. Follow these five simple steps to remove an app from your Facebook account:

Step 1: Open your Facebook account.
Step 2: Click on the down arrow on the toolbar and tap on Settings.
Step 3: Select Apps and choose the apps you want to delete (for example Fashion World in the screenshot below).

Step 4: Click on the X icon that appears next to it.
Step 5: You will now see a popup which gives information about contacting the app to remove your data. Click on the Remove button on the popup.

Do keep in mind that just removing an app doesn’t mean that your data is also revoked from the developer’s database. To make sure that happens, one needs to contact the developer. Please note that this cannot be done through the app and needs to be done through the desktop site.

Android smartphones may take almost two years to match iPhone X’s Face ID tech

NEW DELHI: Ever since Apple launched the iPhone X last year, several big Android OEMs have tried their best to perfect the face recognition technology in their smartphones. Some of the companies that already have similar phone unlocking tech are Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei and more.
Google has brought the support for the same in its Oreo OS version. However, the top smartphone component suppliers claim that Android devices are still far from catching up what Apple has to offer.
Citing some suppliers, Reuters reports that Android brands may take up to two more years to reach the level of Apple’s FaceID. Two major reasons behind this are Apple’s research and development and its tight hold in the 3D face recognition supplying chain.

Viavi Solutions Inc, Finisar Corp and Ams AG, some of the part makers say that mass adoption of this technology won’t happen until next year. When asked about it, OEMs like Huawei, Samsung and Xiaomi declined to comment, says the report.
“It is going to take them a lot of time, the Android-based customers, to secure capacity throughout the whole supply chain,” said Bill Ong, senior director of investor relations, Viavi, to Reuters. He added that “We may have a potential introduction of a second handset maker into 3D sensing at the end of this calendar year. (But) the volumes would be very low. In 2019 you clearly will see at least two or more Android-based phones.”
It is said that Apple has struck a deal with Finisar for VCSELs, an important piece of technology in the iPhone X’s 3D camera module. This deal was made in December last year and hence secures the continuous supply for future iPhone models. It also cuts the supply to other Android OEMs indirectly.
Rumours floating on the web indicate that Apple is preparing to launch three smartphones later this year with all of them featuring Face ID.

Look who has replaced Google to become the world's second-most valuable company

NEW DELHI: E-commerce major Amazon has become the second most valuable company by surpassing tech giant Google. With the current market capitalisation of $768 billion, Amazon is now ranked number two in terms of being the most valuable company in the world.
Alphabet Inc which has value of $761 billion held the second spot earlier, while the list is topped by Apple with a value at $889 billion.
The surge witnessed by Amazon can be attributed to the growth made by the company's CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, who has an estimated fortune of $130 billion. On the other hand, the recent Facebook data scandal is seen as a reason for the change in position of Google.

IBM launches AI-powered 'Watson Assistant' for businesses

LAS VEGAS: Tech giant IBM today announced the formal launch of Watson Assistant, a smart enterprise assistant powered with artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT) and it can be accessed via voice or text interaction.
The smart enterprise assistant is aimed at helping businesses enhance their brand loyalty and transform customer experiences even while keeping the data private and secure, IBM said.
The announcement was made by Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, during her address at the ongoing "Think 2018" - the company's flagship conference being held here.
"Watson has started a very big integrated system. We broke it into API, we broke it into micro-services. It is now platform for businesses... This (Watson Assistant) is pre-trained for hospitality, for automotive; you can embed (it ) in anything (like) customer care, banking and insurance. This is what I mean when I say the inflection point for IBM is all about innovative technologies for you," she said.
Watson Assistant is not just designed for a single location or it doesn't just respond to a person's commands.
"The enterprise AI assistant helps businesses enhance brand loyalty and transform their customer experiences by delivering proactive and personalised services while ensuring data privacy.
"It can be accessed via voice or text interaction, depending on the needs of the business and how consumers wish to interact with it," an IBM release said.
Watson Assistant in the form of "Josie Pepper" is already in use at the Munich Airport at Terminal 2, acting as an ambassador to interact with and assist passengers as they make their way through the terminal.
IBM Watson Assistant and Watson Conversation Services were used to develop a rich conversational back-end, providing a range of topics for Josie to discuss - from real-time airport information, to weather and even small talk, IBM source said.
Royal Bank of Scotland is piloting Watson Assistant that will help triage call centre requests by responding to specific customer queries or directing customers to a human agent, source added.
Building on the existing partnership with Apple, IBM also announced that both the companies will combine their AI and machine-learning technologies to make it easier for developers to build secure AI-powered solutions.
The aim is to allow developers to build apps that continuously learn and adapt, Rometty said.
Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam, who was in an interactive session with Rometty at the Think 2018, said the American telecom company touches 1.2 billion consumers a day and is the largest provider of fibre in the U.S.
"We have 12 million miles of fibre for the next 3 years, enough to go to Mars. 5G will usher in the fourth industrial revolution," McAdam said replying to a query on 5G rollout.

Paytm, Flipkart rank higher than Google in LinkedIn India's 'preferred workplaces' list

NEW DELHI: Professionals in India prefer home-grown tech and mobile Internet companies like Directi, Flipkart and One97 Communications (Paytm) more than global giants like Google and Amazon as their workplace, revealed a new LinkedIn report on Wednesday.
The report includes the ranking of 25 companies in the country that are most sought after by professionals, based on proprietary LinkedIn data and billions of actions by more than 546 million professionals on the platform.
Amazon, which held the second spot for the past two consecutive years in the list, is now ranked fourth in the list after the top three companies -- Directi, Flipkart and One97 Communications -- respectively.

Google's parent company, Alphabet, is ranked seventh in the "Top Companies" list by the professional social network site.
"The 'Top Companies' list highlights the companies where professionals in India want to work now, from home grown companies to global giants," said Adith Charlie, India Editor, LinkedIn.
"Data shows us that an opportunity to work at solving big problems, rewriting the rules of one's industry or simply putting a big name on one's résume could be powerful motivators," Charlie said.
Ola has dropped 11 spots from fifth position in 2017 to 16th this year, and McKinsey & Company has made a significant jump from 24th position to sixth.
This year, more than 50 per cent of the companies are new entrants to the list including Directi (first), Anheuser-Busch InBev (fifth), EY (ninth) and Daimler AG (11th) that have given stiff competition to the usual top runners, Adobe (12th), Reliance Industries (24th), and Ola (16th).
The rankings are based on analysis of flexible hours, a good parental leave policy, and time-off to do more than work to attract and retain good talent.
KPMG India, and OYO, a network of budget hotels in India are the other companies that feature among the top 10 most preferred companies by professionals.

Facebook fined in South Korea for limiting user access

SEOUL: South Korea's telecoms regulator says it is fining Facebook for illegally limiting user access to its services.
The Korea Communications Commission said Wednesday that Facebook should pay 396 million won ($369,400) as a penalty for alleged violations of the communications law from late 2016-2017, following reports it had interfered with some local users' access to Facebook and Instagram.
The KCC probed claims that Facebook intentionally slowed access while it negotiated network usage fees with internet service providers.
Facebook didn't respond to a request for comment. Earlier, the company said it was striving to provide better services to Korean users.

Flipkart's fashion vertical ahead of both Myntra, Jabong

BENGALURU: Sibling rivalry seems to be brewing at Flipkart Group with its primary online marketplace trumpeting that its fashion category has crossed $1 billion in sales this fiscal year. That leaves the group’s fashion-focused arms, Myntra and Jabong, trailing behind with combined GMV of $1.2 billion for the year.
Flipkart said its fashion vertical’s overall market share increased to 35% on the back of its expanded selection and exclusive offerings as well as its promise of faster deliveries. The firm claims to have witnessed robust growth from tier-II plus markets as well as the metros, with the former contributing at double the pace.
Even including “offline retailers we are the first to have crossed this milestone,” said Rishi Vasudev, who heads Flipkart’s fashion vertical. “We have been chalking a growth of over 60% over the last five months and are expecting sales worth $1.7 billion next fiscal year.”
That said, Vasudev insisted that Flipkart Fashion and Myntra, which function independent of each other, do not compete and have different customer propositions — with Myntra focusing on fashion-conscious customers and Flipkart positioning itself as a destination for ‘trendy selection at affordable prices.’ The combined market share of Flipkart Fashion, Myntra and Jabong is over 60%, according to industry estimates. Experts tracking the online fashion space concur that Flipkart Fashion has been growing faster than Myntra. Flipkart Fashion’s sales surged to $800 million in 2017 from $300 million in 2016, while Myntra’s sales increased to $900 million from $700 million over the same period, according to industry estimates.
To put things in perspective, the Indian fashion industry clocked gross sales of about $2.8 billion in 2016 and was pegged at $3.1 billion for 2017, as per data from RedSeer Consulting.
“Flipkart has been aggressively promoting its fashion vertical over the last one year and has added more brands, leading to a faster rate of growth,” said an analyst tracking the space, requesting anonymity. “Customers spend more time on Flipkart since it is a horizontal platform (selling a wide variety of products), which may lead to them buying more fashion (products) from the same website as well.”
For the upcoming fiscal, Flipkart plans to double-down on non-metros to acquire more new customers by providing products spread across different price points and ensuring that at least 20% of overall fashion selection will be branded and exclusive to the platform

Indian BPO firms see a marginal rise in costs if US Congress clears bill

BENGALURU/DELHI: India’s backoffice industry says there could be a marginal increase in costs if a proposed bill by a US Senator against outsourcing call centre jobs is passed but not impact its business as the proportion of call centre work done by the country’s firms has reduced significantly.
While the country’s backoffice industry began with call centres, over the last decade, most of the voice work has shifted to the Philippines with Indian companies focusing on the so-called integrated service offerings — a mix of chat, email response and voice.
“Of the $30-billion (Indian) BPO revenue, the customer interaction pie is around 30%. Of this, Indian companies mostly offered integrated services which have more transactions-related work. This bill, when it is passed, will impact pure call centres,” KS Vishwanathan, who leads the business process management (BPM) initiatives at Nasscom, said.
The bill introduced in the US Congress on March 18 by Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown from Ohio state also demands creation of a list of firms that would outsource call centre jobs and give preference to companies that have created such in the US, including federal loans and grants.
It also seeks to allow call centres to disclose their locations and allow request of clients to transfer the call to agents in the US. Giving customers a choice to speak to service agents or executives in the US would come with an additional cost, said Raman Roy, chief executive officer, Quatrro, an Indian BPO company.
“The call centre outsourcing business is given to India because of commercial reasons.
The quality of service is better and the cost is significantly lower. A few years ago we carried out a test with a loan provider, they put up a form saying if one wants the application to be processed in the US it will take two to three weeks, if one wants it to be processed in India it will take 48 to 72 hours. So, the element of choice is fine, but the choice comes with a cost. The commercial interest has to be taken into account,” said Roy. Over the last few years, politicians in the US have introduced bills seeking restrictions against outsourcing.

Be careful with what your toddler watches on YouTube: It may not help in learning new things

NEW DELHI: Do you let your toddler watch YouTube videos? It may not help them to learn new things, a study suggests.
The study results indicate that toddlers up to two years of age could be entertained and kept busy by their parents showing them YouTube clips on smartphones, but they may not learn anything from the videos.
"Young children are attracted to smartphones more than other forms of media and there is a need for more techno-behavioural studies on child-smartphone interaction," said the lead author of the study, Savita Yadav from the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology in New Delhi.
For the study, published in the journal Acta Paediatrica, the researchers recruited 55 toddlers between 6 to 24 months old, using professional and personal contacts and visited by two observers, for at least 10 minutes.
The observers recorded the toddlers' abilities to interact with touchscreens and identify people in videos and noted what videos attracted them the most.
The toddlers were attracted to music at six months of age and interested in watching the videos at 12 months.
They could identify their parents in videos at 12 months and themselves by 24 months.
They started touching the screen at 18 months and could press the buttons that appeared on the screen, but did not understand their use.
The toddlers preferred watching dance performances by multiple artists with melodic music, advertisements for products they used, and videos showing toys and balloons.

The "Moto Hubs" offer accessories such as on-ear and in-ear headphones, Moto shells and phone covers.

Jaguar Land Rover to test self-driving valet parking on Britain's streets

LONDON: Britain's biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) was showcasing self-driving valet technology on Britain's streets on Thursday which allows a car to find a space and park itself.
The firm's Range Rover Sport will also travel on open public roads at up to 30 miles per hour, as carmakers compete with each other and burgeoning technology companies like Google to deliver the latest advancements to drivers.
"Reducing the everyday stresses of driving - like squeezing into a tight parking place - means that we can all focus on the more enjoyable aspects of our cars," said Joerg Schlinkheider, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Engineer, Automated Driving.
JLR will also showcase technology which alerts drivers when an emergency vehicle is approaching and notifies motorists when another connected car brakes, helping to potentially avoid accidents.
The tests will take place in the central English town of Milton Keynes.
In a potential blow to the technology expected to transform transportation worldwide, an Uber self-driving car hit and killed a woman crossing the street in Arizona, police said on Monday.

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook made mistakes on user data, vows to fix it

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday that his company made mistakes in how it handled data belonging to 50 million of its users and promised tougher steps to restrict developers' access to such information.
The world's largest social media network is facing growing government scrutiny in Europe and the United States about a whistleblower's allegations that London-based political consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed user information to build profiles on American voters which were later used to help elect U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016.
Zuckerberg, in his first public comments since the scandal erupted at the weekend, said in a post on Facebook that the company "made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it."
