BENGALURU: Amazon continues to invest in ramping up its warehousing capabilities for the India market as it adds six new fulfilment centres (FCs) for its large appliances and furniture business, the company said Monday.
With the addition of the new FCs, Amazon has a total of 15 FCs for this segment, which e-commerce players have been pushing as a high growth one. Amazon in all has 62 FCs here in India.
The company said it opened the new FCs to meet the rising demand for products like refrigerators, air conditioners, air coolers and washing machines in the summer season. While smartphones drive a major part of sales for Amazon, it has been aggressively driving the momentum around large appliances to fight Flipkart which too is building additional capacity for this category. Flipkart announced plans to set up a 100 acre logistics park to strengthen its delivery infrastructure.
“Our investments in this specialised network will allow us to come closer to customers and offer faster delivery of large appliances and furniture. We have doubled our storage space, delivery station network and cities we deliver to in just this one year to support the growth of these categories. With a total of 62 fulfilment centres having a storage capacity of 18.5 million cubic feet, we continue to have the largest fulfilment infrastructure in the industry, “said Akhil Saxena, VP, India customer fulfilment, Amazon India.
Saxena told TOI last month about launching 15 new FCs to beef up its grocery business under Amazon Now --a separate platform for express deliveries of grocery products. Large appliances are one of the fastest growing categories, the company said in a statement.
“With this infrastructure addition we want to extend scheduled and next day delivery to more customers. We continue to be relentlessly focused on providing a superior experience for customers buying products in these categories,” said Suchit Subhas, category leader- appliances, Amazon India.
