Glaisher, Coxwell, and a near-fatal balloon ride

On September 5, 1862, Englishmen James Glaisher and Henry Coxwell rose to 37,000 feet on their balloon, breaking the record for travelling higher than any other person before. The ride, however, had taken an almost uncontrollable turn by then and it was only a stroke of luck that prevented both men from dying.
