Top German CEOs meet PM Modi, trade ideas on new opportunities in business and education

New Delhi: Lauding India’s efforts to decarbonize supply chains and produce green hydrogen with the use of technology, a group of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of major German companies on Saturday said that they would be more than happy to partner with India in achieving sustainability goals.

“India has high aspirations for sustainability and wants to use technology to decarbonize supply chains to move to the circular economy, to produce green hydrogen. And that goes hand in hand with technology. And India has a very strong agenda for both topics,” Software major Systems, Applications & Products (SAP) CEO Christian Klein said after completing a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“And look, without technology, we won’t reach our sustainability goals. So it has to come together. And that’s why I like the digital agenda of India so much,” he added.

A group of CEOs of major German firms had a meeting with PM Modi on Saturday and discussed new opportunities for German corporates to expand their footprint in the country while tapping educational and business opportunities in India.

PM Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is on an official two-day visit to the country interacted with top executives from Indian and German companies to discuss ways to deepen economic ties between the two nations. The meeting also touched upon methods to boost bilateral ties in the areas of clean energy, trade and new technologies.

The focus areas for mutual cooperation included digital transformation, financial technology, IT and telecom.

“Chancellor @OlafScholz and I met top CEOs to discuss ways to strengthen economic relations between our nations. Sectors like digital transformation, FinTech, IT and Telecom featured prominently in the meeting,” PM Modi tweeted earlier in the day.

Dr Tobias Meyer, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group said his firm had been working in India for more than 45 years and the country had proved to be a good market for German firms in the past. “We see real potential in India, DHL has been working in India for more than 45 years. India is a good market for us and we see the momentum here,” he emphasised.

Renk CEO, Susanne Weigand, was also part of the group which met the Prime Minister. Renk is a company that is involved in the defence industry.

“We are very honoured to be here and to be able to attend a meeting with honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These meetings are very much appreciated. We are proud to be here, a trusted partner of the Indian government. We are supplying the Indian Army and Navy with drive solutions. We are also supplying high-speed gears to the Indian energy market,” Weigand said.

Expressing full faith in the Indian Prime Minister’s leadership, CEO of SFC Energy, Dr. Peter Podesser said, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is building a technology base for solar energy and green hydrogen. India can turn itself into a good hub for manufacturing, R&D and engineering services.

The PM’s meeting with the CEOs of leading German manufacturing firms of various fields was in sync with the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Quite a few of the top German executives had a word of praise for the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Roland Busch, President & CEO, Siemens AG said, “India has huge potential in Green Energy, Infrastructures & Healthcare with investments under #MakeinIndia initiatives. India has a huge population of young people, digital affinity as well as a lot of pace making it a suitable destination for further investment in future.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in New Delhi on Saturday on a two-day visit to India, his first to the country after he became the Chancellor in December 2021, following Angela Merkel’s historic 16-year tenure.

From start of Russia-Ukraine war to Harvey Weinstein's rape conviction: Major events that happened on 24 February

Today, 24 February, marks the first anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. The conflict which is still going on, started on 24 February 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his troops to invade his pro-western neighbour. But it is not the only significant event to occur on this date. The Voice of America was broadcast in German for the first time in 1942 with the aim of combating Nazi propaganda. Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Tech giant Apple, was born on this very day in 1955. On 24 February 1991, US ground operations started in the Persian Gulf War. In 2020, American film producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape by an American court.

1942 – The Voice of America broadcast in German for first time

The US government’s broadcasting network, Voice of America (VOA), made its first program in German on 24 February 1942. The move intended to counter the propaganda of Nazi leaders. The VOA had been broadcasting 3,200 programs in 40 languages every week by the time World War concluded. It became a part of the United States Information Agency (USIA) when the agency was set up in 1953.

1955 – Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc, was born

Steve Jobs, co-founder of tech giant Apple Inc, was born on this day in 1955.  Jobs was interested in engineering. He started working as a  video game designer at Atari, after he dropped out of Reed College. In 1974, he visited India to learn more about Buddhism. Jobs later founded Apple Computers, Inc. on 1 April 1976 along with Steve Wozniak. Under his guidance, the tech giant launched innovative products like the iPod, Mac computer and iPhone.

1976 – Fidel Castro’s regime adopted constitution of Cuba

The constitution of Cuba was adopted by the Fidel Castro regime on this day in 1976. The constitution mandated the operation of only one political party- the Communist Party of Cuba. The party was defined as the “organized vanguard of the Cuban nation” in the revised constitution of 1992.

1991 – US ground operations started in Persian Gulf War

American ground operations in the Persian Gulf War commenced on 24 February 1991. The ground offensive came over a month after an air war was started against Iraq and its occupation of Kuwait. A massive allied ground offensive, named Operation Desert Sabre, was launched northward from north-eastern Saudi Arabia into Kuwait and southern Iraq on this day. The Arab and American forces retook Kuwait city within three days. Iraq’s then leader, Saddam Hussein, had ordered the invasion of Kuwait with an apparent aim to acquire the nation’s large oil reserves and cancel the large debt his country owed to it.

2020 – American film producer Harvey Weinstein convicted of rape

Germany expels 2 Iranian embassy staff over death sentence handed out to German national

Berlin: Germany has marked two employees of the Iranian embassy personae non gratae and ordered them to leave the country immediately in response to Iran sentencing a German national to death, a statement from the foreign office said on Wednesday.

Germany summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in a statement, adding: “He was informed that we do not accept the massive violation of the rights of a German citizen.”

“We call on Iran to revoke Jamshid Sharmahd’s death sentence and provide him with a fair appeal process based on the rule of law,” she added.

Calling on Iran to reverse the ruling, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the sentence as unacceptable. “The Iranian regime fights its own people in every possible way and disregards human rights,” Scholz wrote on Twitter.

Sharmahd, a German-Iranian national, was sentenced to death on charges of “corruption on earth”, the judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported on Tuesday.

The verdict, however, can be appealed.

A foreign ministry spokesman said on Wednesday that the consulate was working to provide further support to the dual national and was in touch with the man’s relatives.

“We will continue to provide consular support to the extent that this is possible. I have already explained how difficult this is in Iran,” the spokesperson said.

“This is a first instance verdict and we will follow the progress of the situation,” he added.

Iran accused Sharmahd, who also has US residency, of heading a pro-monarchist group accused of a deadly 2008 bombing and planning other attacks in the country. Tensions between Iran and the West have intensified in recent months, pushing already-stalled efforts to revive talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme further into the background. Germany has been a vocal supporter of European Union sanctions against Iran over its crackdown on protesters in the country.

Today, 22 February, marks the anniversary of several significant events. It was on this very day in 1944 that Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, Kasturba Gandhi, breathed her last. 1944- Kasturba Gandhi died 
Kasturba Gandhi breathed her last on 22 February 1944. She and her husband Mahatma Gandhi fought against British rule in India. She had participated in a number of civil disobedience campaigns in the 1930s and was even arrested and jailed multiple times. While imprisoned at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune, her health deteriorated, leading to her demise in a few months.

 

1980- US ice hockey team defeated Soviet Union at Olympics:
The Soviet Union’s ice hockey team were favourites at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Facing off against the United States, the squad was shockingly defeated 4-3 in the semi-final, leading to one of the biggest upsets in the history of the event. The US men’s ice hockey team went on to clinch a gold medal in the tournament, defeating Finland 4-2 in the final.

 

1997- Dolly cloned successfully:
A sheep named Dolly became the first mammal to be cloned from an ‘adult cell’, something which was previously deemed impossible in science. On 22 February 1997, scientists working at the Roslin Institute near Dublin announced Dolly’s birth. The project came together under the direction of Ian Wilmut.

2011- Christchurch earthquake:
New Zealand’s Christchurch was struck by a massive aftershock after enduring tremors for five months. The 6.3 magnitude earthquake led to substantial liquefaction, shaking and surface cracks in the city and its surrounding area.

2014- Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych impeached:

On 22 February 2014, Ukraine’s parliament voted to impeach President Viktor Yanukovych. The development came after Yanukovych suspended a landmark association and trade deal with the European Union in favour of closer ties to Russia. This led to widespread protests against his government. Yanukovych later fled the country and has been accused of embezzlement.

6.3 magnitude earthquake jolts Turkey-Syria border days after deadly tremors claimed over 47,000 lives

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake at a depth of two km (1.2 miles) struck the Turkey-Syria border region on Monday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, Reuters reported.

Witnesses told Reuters that Turkish rescue teams were running around after the latest quake, checking people were unharmed.

This comes two weeks after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the region claiming more than 47,000 lives.

Turkey on Sunday said rescue efforts following last week’s devastating earthquake had ended in all but two provinces.

Harsh winters have hampered rescue work in the affected areas.

1943 – Paricutín volcano erupted 

One of the youngest volcanoes on Earth, Paricutín which is located in Mexico’s Michoacán state, started erupting in an open field on 20 February 1943. The volcano’s eruption buried two villages and hundreds of homes. 

1962 – John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth

It was on 20 February 1962, when astronaut John H Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth as a part of his three-orbit Mercury-Atlas 6 mission. In 4 hours and 55 minutes, Glenn circled the planet thrice in his space capsule ‘Friendship 7’. Nearly four decades after this, the astronaut also became the oldest human ever to travel in space.

1986 – The core module of space station Mir was launched 

It was on this date back in 1986 when the core module of the Russian Space Station ‘Mir’ was launched by the Soviet Union. Over the next 10 years, additional modules were sent aloft, following which a large habitat was created. It served as a versatile space laboratory for over 14 years.

1878: Thomas Alva Edison patented the phonograph:
If you are one of those who cannot imagine your life without music, then today is especially significant for you. On this day in 1878, inventor Thomas Alva Edison patented the phonograph, a device to record sound and play it back. The invention had a big role to play in the development of the modern music industry.

1942- FDR signed order for internment of Japanese Americans:
In the wake of the Pearl Harbour attack by Japanese forces during World War II, negative sentiments against the community solidified in the United States. On 19 February 1942, US President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. The order called for the forced removal of all people deemed as a threat to national security from the West Coast to “relocation centers” further inland. Though the word Japanese was not mentioned in the order, only Japanese Americans were targeted and forced into internment camps. Between 1942 and 1945, 10 camps, holding approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans, existed. It was in the end of 1944, that the US government announced that the relocation centres would be closed down gradually.

1945- US Marines invaded Iwo Jima:
The fierce battle between Japan and United States over the island of Iwo Jima started on this day. On 19 February 1945, US Marines landed on the strategically important island, marking the start of one of the most well-known battles of World War II. About a month later, the American forces finally succeeded in capturing the island.

2008- Fidel Castro stepped down:
Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro announced that he was stepping down as the president of his country in 2008. He was succeeded by his brother Raul. In 1959, Fidel had driven away US-supported dictator General Fulgencio Batista from the country in a coup and assumed power, turning Cuba into the first communist country in the western hemisphere.

2019- Karl Lagerfeld died:
Fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld breathed his last in 2019. The German designer was the creative power behind the revival of French fashion brand Chanel. He also served in the Italian design house Fendi. Lagerfeld later left Chanel to establish his own label.

Over 2,400 killed in 'most powerful' earthquake to strike Turkey & Syria in nearly a century

Over 2,400 people have been killed in the “most powerful earthquake” to strike Turkey and Syria in nearly a century on Monday.

Tremors from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake were felt as far away as Greenland.

The early morning quake, followed by dozens of aftershocks, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions who have fled the civil war in neighbouring Syria and other conflicts.

Rescuers have been using heavy equipment and their bare hands to peel back rubble in search of survivors, who they could in some cases hear begging for help under the debris.

“Since I live in an earthquake zone, I am used to being shaken,” Melisa Salman, a reporter in the Turkish city of Kahramanmaras told AFP.

“But that was the first time we have ever experienced anything like that. We thought it was the apocalypse,” she added.

The head of Syria’s National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed, called it “the biggest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre”.

At least 810 people died in rebel and government-controlled parts of Syria, state media and medical sources said, while Turkish officials reported more than 1,600 fatalities.

The rescue work is being hampered by a winter blizzard that covered major roads in ice and snow. Officials said the quake made three major airports in the area inoperable, further complicating deliveries of vital aid.

Turkey’s last 7.8-magnitude tremor was in 1939, when 33,000 died in the eastern Erzincan province.

Epicentre near historic city of Gaziantep

Monday’s first quake struck at 4:17am (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 18 kilometres (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people, the US Geological Survey said.

Denmark’s geological institute said tremors from the main quake reached the east coast of Greenland about eight minutes after the tremor struck Turkey.

Osama Abdel Hamid, a quake survivor in Syria, told AFP his family was sleeping when the shaking began.

“I woke up my wife and my children and we ran towards the door,” he said. “We opened it and suddenly the building collapsed.”

A spokesman for Syria’s civil defence said teams were scrambling to rescue trapped people.

“Many buildings in different cities and villages in northwestern Syria collapsed… Even now, many families are under the rubble,” said Ismail Alabdallah.

2000-year-old castle in Turkey destroyed

Images on Turkish television showed rescuers digging through rubble across city centres and residential neighbourhoods of almost all the big cities running along the border with Syria.

Some of the heaviest devastations occurred near the quake’s epicentre between Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep, where entire city blocks lay in ruins under the gathering snow.

A famous mosque dating back to the 13th century partially collapsed in the province of Maltaya, where a 14-story building with 28 apartments that housed 92 people also collapsed.

In other cities, social media posts showed a 2,200-year-old hilltop castle built by Roman armies in Gaziantep lying in ruins, its walls partially turned to rubble.

In Syria’s war-torn Aleppo, the ancient citadel was damaged.

Power outages

The Syrian health ministry reported damage across the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus, where Russia is leasing a naval facility.

Even before the tragedy, buildings in Aleppo — Syria’s pre-war commercial hub — often collapsed due to the dilapidated infrastructure, which has suffered from lack of war-time oversight.

Officials cut off natural gas and power supplies across the region as a precaution, also closing schools for two weeks.

Global powers rush to help

The United States, the European Union, India and Russia all immediately sent condolences and offers of help.

India has already sent a team of rescuers and medics to Turkey. It has also offered assistance to Syria.

Russia too has dispatched rescuers to both countries.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered to provide “the necessary assistance” to Turkey, whose combat drones are helping Kyiv fight the Russian invasion.

The Turkish region of Duzce suffered a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1999, when more than 17,000 people died — including about 1,000 in Istanbul.

Experts have long warned a large quake could devastate Istanbul, a megalopolis of 16 million people filled with rickety homes.

Twitter faces lawsuit by advisory firm for $1.9 million in unpaid bills

New York: US-based advisory firm Innisfree M&A Incorporated sued Twitter on Friday in New York State Supreme Court, seeking about $1.9 million compensation for what it says are unpaid bills after it advised the social media company on its acquisition by Elon Musk last year.

“As of December 23, 2022, Twitter remains in default of its obligations to Innisfree under the agreement in an amount of not less than $1,902,788.03,” the lawsuit said.

Twitter and a lawyer for Innisfree did not respond to queries.

Elon Musk in October closed the $44 billion deal announced in April that year and took over microblogging platform Twitter.

In January 2023, Britain’s Crown Estate, an independent commercial business that manages the property portfolio belonging to the monarchy, said that it had begun court proceedings against Twitter over alleged unpaid rent on its London headquarters.

Advertising spending on Twitter Inc dropped by 71% in December, data from an advertising research firm showed, as top advertisers slashed their spending on the social-media platform after Musk’s takeover.

The banks that had provided $13 billion in financing last year for the Tesla chief executive’s acquisition of Twitter abandoned plans to sell the debt to investors because of uncertainty around the social media company’s fortunes and losses, according to media reports.

Recently, Twitter made its first interest payment on a loan that banks provided to help finance Musk’s purchase of the social media company last year.

'German tanks threatening Russia again' to 'victory over Nazism in Ukraine': What Putin said on Stalingrad anniversary

Addressing an audience of military officers to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Army’s victory over Nazi German forces in Stalingrad, Russian president Vladimir Putin lambasted the West for sending weapons to Ukraine.

Putin vowed to defeat Ukraine and warned the West that a “modern war with Russia will be completely different” as Russia commemorated victory in the decisive battle that change the course of World War 2.

Bloodiest WW2 battle

With 2 million casualties, Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943) was the bloodiest battle of the Second World War. Soviet troops defeated invading Nazi German forces who wanted to capture the industrial city of Volgograd then known as Stalingrad.

The city of Tsaritsyn on the River Volga in southern Russia was renamed in honour of Soviet dictator and also the USSR leader during WW2 Joseph Stalin in 1925.

It was renamed Volgograd in 1961, eight years after Stalin’s death.
