Putin expects China’s Xi to visit Moscow, Xi holds his ground on Ukraine

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said he was expecting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to make a state visit early next year in what would be a public show of solidarity from Beijing as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine falters.

But an official Chinese readout of a video summit between the two world leaders however, highlighted differences in approach to their developing alliance, one that makes no mention of a visit and stresses that Beijing, which has declined to back or condemn the invasion, would maintain its “objective and fair” stand on the invasion of Ukraine.

Since sending thousands of troops into Ukraine in February, Russia has turned its back on the Western powers that have sanctioned it economically and politically and armed Ukraine, courting the rising global power of long-time rival China instead.

“We are expecting you, dear Mr Chairman, dear friend, we are expecting you next spring on a state visit to Moscow,” Putin told Xi in an effusive eight-minute introductory statement broadcast on state television.

“This will demonstrate to the whole world the strength of Russian-Chinese ties on key issues.”

He also said he aimed to boost military cooperation with China – although there was no mention of this in the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV’s report of the call.

Although Xi called Putin his “dear friend”, his introductory statement, at around a quarter the length of Putin’s, was far more pragmatic in tone.

The two men had signed a “no limits” strategic partnership in February, informed by shared distrust of the West, a few days before Russia sent its armed forces into Ukraine in what it terms a “special military operation”.

Since major Western economies responded to Russia’s invasion with an unprecedented, barrage of sanctions, Russia has been forced to seek other markets, and has overtaken Saudi Arabia as the top crude supplier to China. Bilateral trade has soared and financial ties have been expanded.

Moscow has also publicly backed Xi’s position on Taiwan and accused the West of trying to provoke a conflict over the status of the self-governing island, which China claims as its own.

However, the Chinese leader has been less vocal in his criticism of Western countries that are China’s key export market, and has appeared cool on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

China has refrained from condemnation, instead stressing the need for peace, but Putin in September publicly acknowledged that his Chinese counterpart had “concerns” about Russia’s actions.

Netanyahu returns to power

Netanyahu took the oath of office moments after parliament passed a vote of confidence in his new government. His return marks his sixth term in office, continuing his more than decade-long dominance over Israeli politics. His new government has pledged to prioritize settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, extend massive subsidies to his ultra-Orthodox allies and push for sweeping reform of the judicial system that could endanger the country’s democratic institutions.

Netanyahu is the country’s longest-serving prime minister, having held office from 2009 until 2021 and a stint in the 1990s. He was ousted from office last year after four deadlocked elections by a coalition of eight parties solely united in their opposition to his rule while on trial for corruption.

Apart from the Christmas celebration, 25 December has witnessed a number of other historic happenings over the years. On this day in 1962, the American classic – To Kill a Mockingbird made its debut on silver screens. In 1977, on the same day, the global film industry lost a notable figure, Charlie Chaplin. Looking at world politics, the resignation of President Mikhail Gorbachev led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Christmas or Jesus Christ’s birthday

Nobody knows the exact date that Jesus was born as the Bible doesn’t give a certain time. According to Sextus Julius Africanus, a Roman Christian historian, Jesus Christ was conceived on 25 March. Additionally, Africanus shared the view that this day marked the beginning of the world. So, considering the nine months he spent growing inside his mother’s womb, Jesus’ birthday would be on 25 December.

American cult classic To Kill a Mockingbird premiered

American drama film To Kill a Mockingbird, helmed by Robert Mulligan, premiered on 25 December 1962. Horton Foote’s screenplay is based on Harper Lee’s 1960 novel of the same name, which received the Pulitzer Prize. Gregory Peck played Atticus Finch in the movie, and Mary Badham portrayed Scout. It garnered a resoundingly favourable response from both the audience and the critics. The cult classic was a box office hit, making more than six times its initial investment. The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three of them, including Best Actor for Peck.

Charlie Chaplin died

On 25 December 1977, English comic actor cum filmmaker Charlie Chaplin breathed his last in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland. Chaplin, widely regarded as a perfectionist, heralded a new era of silent film during his time in the film industry. Chaplin emerged to be a global icon through his popular on-screen personal, the Tramp. His more than 75-year-long acting career was surrounded by both admiration and controversies. In 1972, Chaplin received an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of the immeasurable contribution he made to cinema becoming the century’s greatest art form.

Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as the President of the Soviet Union

On 25 December 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev formally announced his resignation as president of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union collapsed on that same day. As its replacement, the democratic rulers of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus formed the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a free association of sovereign states which began operation in early 1992. At that time, Boris Yeltsin was in power as the president of Russia. The Russian government under Yeltsin took over most of the responsibilities of the former Soviet Union.

Russia to give Iran advanced military components in exchange for drones, says UK

London: The United Kingdom on Tuesday accused Russia of planning to give Iran advanced military components in exchange for hundreds of drones for use in the ongoing war with Ukraine, British defence minister Ben Wallace said, calling on European nations to do more to expose the deal.

“Iran has become one of Russia’s top military backers,” Wallace told British Parliament as part of a statement on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“In return for having supplied more than 300 kamikaze drones, Russia now intends to provide Iran with advanced military components, undermining both Middle East and international security — we must expose that deal. In fact, I have, just now,” the British defence minister said.

He did not provide details to Parliament on the type of military components he said Russia wanted to give Iran. The Russian defence ministry and Iran’s foreign ministry did not react to UK’s allegations yet.

The United Kingdom, along with Western allies, has been at the forefront of providing defence aid and assistance to Ukraine following the Russian invasion of key regions of Ukraine in February this year.

Earlier on Tuesday, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell informed Iran’s foreign minister that Tehran should immediately halt military support for Russia.

Iran has acknowledged sending drones to Russia but said they were sent before Moscow invaded Ukraine in February. Moscow has denied its forces used Iranian drones in its war against Ukraine.

In a fresh attempt at winning the ongoing war and crippling Ukraine, Russia on Monday, attacked Ukraine with dozens of “kamikaze” drones, hitting critical infrastructure in and around Kyiv in what was Moscow’s third air attack on the Ukrainian capital in less than a week.

“Kamikaze” or “suicide” drones are cheaply produced, disposable unmanned aircraft that fly towards their target before plummeting at speed and detonating on impact.

The United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union have sanctioned Iranian military figures and defence manufacturers believed to be involved in the supply of Iranian drones to Russia.

One in 4 Ukrainians at risk of mental ailments due to ongoing war, says WHO

Geneva: Global health watchdog– the World Health Organization — on Tuesday said that 10 million people, or about one-fourth of Ukraine’s population, may suffer from mental health disorders in relation to the ongoing conflict in that country.

“WHO estimates that up to 10 million people are at risk of some form of a mental disorder, varying from anxiety and stress to more severe conditions,” Jarno Habicht, WHO’s representative in Ukraine told a news gathering via video link in Geneva.

Acute mental conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by distressing events are likely to afflict one in every four Ukrainians going through the war, WHO said. Cases of mental ailments are rising after 10 months of conflict, prompting a separate United Nations agency to launch online support services where needed.

War-torn Ukraine’s healthcare system has been under pressure since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. So far, there have been at least 700 attacks on its healthcare system, WHO data shows, and Russia’s increase in attacks on critical infrastructure such as the power grid since October, has added to the challenges by plunging the country into darkness.

Responding to global criticism, Moscow, has however, denied targeting civilians in what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine. But reports and images emerging out of Ukraine have revealed mass graves and torture chambers in cities and regions occupied by Russian troops.

The WHO has said respiratory diseases would increase with the cold weather and insufficient heating as would car accidents caused by unlit streets due to extensive blackouts.

“The health system is functioning. But as it is 10 months it’s a huge stress test,” he said. “We are constantly seeing new challenges,” Habicht told the media.

Alidoosti is one of the country’s most popular cinema figures and her’s is arguably the most high profile arrests that have been made in relation to the ongoing protests in Iran.

Alidoosti was arrested days after she took to Instagram to condemn the execution of 23-year-old Mohsen Shekari. He is the first person executed by the regime on charges related to the ongoing protests.

The 38-year-old actor shared a post saying “Your silence means supporting oppression and oppressors.”

This was not Alidoosti’s first brush with the authorities in the context of the ongoing protests.

On 9 November, the actor posted a picture of herself without the mandatory hijab in a move described by Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad as a “cultural earthquake.”

Alidoosti also held a sign with the protest slogan “Women, life, freedom.”

She was not immediately arrested after this picture was posted on Instagram, unlike her contemporary Hengameh Ghaziani who was arrested hours after she removed her hijab in public.

Meanwhile, Alidoosti’s Instagram account with more than 8 million followers remains unavailable. Her Twitter account has also been suspended.

What perhaps stopped authorities from immediately arresting Alidoosti was her stature as not just one of Iran’s most established stars but also as a globally renowned personality.

Alidoosti’s long and acclaimed body of work includes the 2016 Oscar-winning movie ‘The Salesman’.

Her films I’m Taraneh, 15 (2002) and About Elly (2009) were Iran’s official entries to the Oscars.

‘The brave actress of Iran’

Unlike several of her contemporaries, Alidoosti chose to stay in Iran. After announcing her support for the protests, she said that will be leaving the film industry.

Unsurprisingly, Alidoosti’s arrest has sparked global outrage with several of her co-actors and the Cannes film festival calling for her immediate release.

Alidoosti’s About Elly co-star Golshifteh Farhani shared a picture of the two on Instagram. She captioned the photo which shows Alidoosti with her head uncovered, “the brave actress of Iran got arrested.”

Iranian American actress Nazanin Boniadi posted on Instagram that Alidoosti has been kept in the Evin prison which is infamous for torturing inmates.

On the big screen, Alidoosti is known for playing unconventional roles. In her debut movie I’m Taraneh, 15 she plays the role of a young single mother. In the 2022’s Leila’s Brothers, she is seen as a middle-aged woman who’s setting up a family business in economic sanctions-hit Iran.

In her real life too, Alidoosti took brave roles. A vocal feminist, she supported the MeToo movement in the Iranian film industry where sexual harassment remains taboo.

But for Iran, the top actor is now only one of the odd 18,450 people who have been arrested in connection with the demonstrations sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini following her arrest by the morality police on 16 September.

The message is clear. You can be anyone but you will not be spared if you speak against the Islamic republic.

Vladimir Putin meets top military generals amid reports of new wave of attacks in Ukraine

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has met his military chiefs, amid reports that he is planning to launch a new wave of attacks in Ukraine.

He spent most of Friday at the headquarters of the “special military operation”, the Kremlin said on Saturday.

The Russian President was accompanied by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Armed Forces chief Valeriy Gerasimov.

The meeting with the top military generals comes amid claims by Ukraine that Moscow is preparing to launch a new offensive after a string of defeats.

“We will listen to the commanders in each operational direction, and I would like to hear your proposals on our immediate and medium-term actions,” Putin was seen telling military leaders in footage on state TV.

Kyiv’s forces have made a series of major advances in recent months, including retaking Kherson — the only major city captured by Russian forces so far.

The collapse of Moscow’s forces in eastern Ukraine earlier this year saw military leaders come in for sustained criticism from pro-Kremlin media.

The meeting followed claims by the commander of Ukraine’s military, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, that Moscow could seek to launch a new offensive in early 2023. He warned that Russia was preparing around 200,000 troops for the attack.

“I have no doubt they will have another go at Kyiv,” he added. “I know how many combat units I have right now, how many combat units I have to create by the end of the year – and, most importantly, not to touch them in any way now. No matter how hard it is.”

He added that the attack could originate “in the direction of Kyiv” and may be launched from Belarus.

In February, Russian troops advanced towards the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after crossing the border from Belarus.

Record number of loaded guns seized from passengers across US airports

Washington: A record number of firearms have been confiscated from several US airport passengers in 2022, transport officials have said. A total of 6,301 guns were seized at checkpoints as of mid-December – and among those a massive 88% were still loaded.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it expects to confiscate 6,600 guns by year’s end – a 10% increase over 2021’s level.

The administrative agency said guns brought to airports consumes significant resources and is very costly for the passenger.

The number of guns found in 2022 surpasses the previous record from last year, when 5,972 firearms were detected in baggage of passengers.

The Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, had the highest number of recorded firearm stops, while Dallas/Fort Worth Airport in the state of Texas had the second highest.

Administrative officials could not find any clear reason why so many people were attempting to clear security while carrying a weapon.

Gun possession laws vary from state to state in the US, but firearms are not allowed in the passenger cabin on an aircraft, even if a passenger has a concealed weapon permit. If TSA officials detect a weapon at a checkpoint, they issue a civil penalty that varies by number of previous offenses and whether the gun was loaded at the time.

The agency also said it is raising the maximum civil penalty for a firearms violation from USD 13,910 to USD 14,950.

Airline passengers can travel with firearms in a checked-in bag when they are unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case. Travellers must also tell airline representatives that they intend to travel with the weapon during check-in.

According to the TSA, it screened more than 2.5 million individuals nationwide on 27 November – the Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday – marking the highest volume since the start of the pandemic.

China’s Covid-19 surge not due to lifting of rigid curbs, says top WHO official

Geneva: China had started witnessing a massive surge in Covid-19 infections before the Chinese government decided to lift its strict “zero-Covid” policy, a World Health Organization (WHO) director said on Wednesday, refuting claims that the abrupt withdrawal of restrictions had led to the sudden spike in cases.

 WHO’s emergencies director Mike Ryan cautioned the Chinese that the need of the hour was to ramp up vaccinations in China as he pointed out that infections had started spreading even before the Chinese government had decided to lift curbs after being hit by waves of rare protests.

 Ryan said the virus was spreading “intensively in the nation long before the lifting of restrictions. “There’s a narrative at the moment that China lifted the restrictions and all of a sudden the disease is out of control,” he said.

“The disease was spreading intensively because I believe the control measures in themselves were not stopping the disease. And I believe China decided strategically that was not the best option anymore,” he said.

 Earlier this month, China had started gradually lifting its “zero-Covid” policy and lockdowns in several provinces after people took to the streets against the stringent restrictions imposed on them to stop the spread of the infection, in a rare show of protest in mainland China.

The sudden easing of restrictions triggered long queues outside fever clinics amid fears that a wave of infections was in the offing, even though official tallies of new Covid-19 cases started dipping as the government took a step back on testing.

In its most recent Covid-19 report for the week to 27 November, the World Health Organization said China had reported increasing hospitalisations for four consecutive weeks.

“So the challenge that China and other countries still have is: are the people that need to be vaccinated, adequately vaccinated, with the right vaccines and the right number of doses and when was the last time those people had the vaccines,” said Ryan.

 WHO’s senior epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove said the UN agency was providing technical advice to China and Ryan said there were open channels.

Among the first major announcements in which a Western drug maker will supply China with Covid-19 therapies, China Meheco Group Co Ltd (600056.SS) said on Wednesday that it would import and distribute Pfizer’s (PFE.N) oral COVID-19 treatment Paxlovid.

Earlier in the briefing, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was “hopeful” that the pandemic, which has killed more than 6.6 million people since it emerged in Wuhan, China three years ago, will no longer be considered a global emergency sometime next year.

US blacklists Chinese chipmaker, plans major crackdown on AI chip sector

Washington: The United States administration on Thursday put Chinese memory chipmaker YMTC and 21 other major Chinese players in the artificial intelligence chip-manufacturing industry on a trade blacklist, broadening its crackdown on China’s chip-making industry.

YMTC, has been on the radar of the US government for a long time. It was added to the trade blacklist over fears that it could divert US technology to previously blacklisted Chinese tech giants Huawei and Hikvision. The move, laid out in the Federal Register, will bar YMTC’s suppliers from shipping American goods to it without a difficult-to-obtain license.

The 21 Chinese AI chip firms added to the trade blacklist, which include Cambricon Technologies Corp and CETC, face an even tougher penalty, with the US government effectively blocking their access to technology made anywhere in the world with American equipment.

With the Chinese government seeking to remove barriers between its military and civilian sectors, “US national security interests require that we act decisively to deny access to advanced technologies,” Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration Thea Kendler said in a statement on Thursday.

YMTC, Cambricon, CETC and the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to the recent move by the US administration.

The move adds to the sweeping export controls imposed on Beijing in October to slowdown China’s technological and military advances, including measures to curb the Asian giant’s access to US chip making tools and cut it off from certain chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment.

The Commerce Department on Thursday also targeted nine Chinese entities for allegedly seeking to support China’s military modernization, including Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment Group Co Ltd (SMEE), China’s only lithography company. A total of 35 Chinese entities were added to the US trade blacklist, known as the entity list, as well as YMTC’s Japan-based subsidiary.

The Biden administration also removed Wuxi Biologics, a company that makes ingredients for AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine, and 25 other Chinese entities from the so-called unverified list thanks to successful site visits.

UN removes Iran from women's rights body over crackdown on anti-hijab protests

The United Nations on Wednesday voted to remove Iran from a women’s rights body over Tehran’s brutal crackdown of women-led protests.

Following a campaign led by the United States, 29 members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) voted to expel the Islamic republic from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term.

India was among the 16 countries that abstained while Russia and China were among the eight nations that voted against the US-led resolution.

The resolution says it strips Iran of its membership of the commission with immediate effect.

The text says the Iranian leadership “continuously undermine and increasingly suppress the human rights of women and girls, including the right to freedom of expression and opinion, often with the use of excessive force.”

It adds that Iran’s government does so “by administering policies flagrantly contrary to the human rights of women and girls” and the commission’s mandate “as well as through the use of lethal force resulting in the deaths of peaceful protestors, including women and girls.”

The commission is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

In early November, Vice President Kamala Harris said the United States would work with other nations to oust Iran from the commission.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had also campaigned for the move.

Opponents, including Russia and China, noted that Iran had been elected to the body and that expelling it set “a dangerous precedent.”

Nations on the women’s commission are elected by the UN Economic and Social Council, whose members in turn are voted on by the General Assembly.

Iran has been gripped by demonstrations since the September 16 death in custody of Masha Amini, a young Iranian Kurd who had been arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.

Authorities have since made thousands of arrests in a crackdown on what they regard as riots.

Iran’s judiciary has said it has handed down 11 death sentences in connection with the protests.

Iran had accused Washington of pressurising countries ahead of the vote.

Five more complaints about Dominic Raab’s behaviour being probed, says Sunak’s office

London: Five more complaints about British deputy prime minister Dominic Raab’s behaviour will be investigated, the UK prime minister’s official spokesman said on Wednesday. The spokesperson said the complaints were related to Raab’s previous tenure as justice secretary.

With the addition of the new accusations, a total of eight complaints are now being investigated by senior lawyer Adam Tolley KC.

Raab, who was reappointed by British PM Rishi Sunak as justice secretary and deputy prime minister in October soon after taking charge as premier, has denied all allegations of bullying and rude behaviour during his tenure in the administration.

“There is zero tolerance for bullying across the civil service. The deputy prime minister leads a professional department, driving forward major reforms, where civil servants are valued and the level of ambition is high,” a person aware of the probe and seeking anonymity said.

“There is an independent investigation under way that is being overseen by the Cabinet Office, and it would be inappropriate to comment further on issues relating to it until it is completed,” he added.

Raab has earlier served as justice secretary and deputy prime minister under former UK PM Boris Johnson.

The three complaints already being investigated are in connection with his time as foreign secretary and Brexit secretary, as well as at the Ministry of Justice.

'Overthrow this tyrannical regime': Sister of Iran supreme leader Khamenei backs protesters

The sister of Iran’s supreme leader has slammed his “despotic” rule and thrown her support behind protests ignited by Mahsa Amini’s death, in a letter published Wednesday by her son.

The statement came days after her daughter was arrested for criticising Khamenei.

Protests have gripped Iran since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish origin, died on September 16 after her arrest in Tehran for an alleged breach of the Islamic republic’s strict dress code for women.

Tehran says more than 200 people have been killed in the unrest, but Oslo-based non-governmental organisation Iran Human Rights says the country’s security forces have killed at least 458 protesters, including 63 children.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 83, has accused Iran’s arch enemy the United States and its allies of stoking the protests, which Tehran has sought to portray as “riots”.

Rights activists say the demonstrations were sparked by anger over the repression of women, before expanding to include other grievances.

“I oppose my brother’s actions,” Khamenei’s sister Badri Hosseini Khamenei, who is believed to be in Iran, said in a letter published online by her France-based son Mahmoud Moradkhani.

“I express my sympathy with all mothers mourning the crimes of the Islamic republic regime,” from the time of its founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini “to the current era of the despotic caliphate of Ali Khamenei”, she wrote.

“My concern has always been and will always be the people, especially the women of Iran,” she added.

She accused the regime of bringing “nothing but suffering and oppression to Iran and Iranians” since it was established following the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the shah.

“The people of Iran deserve freedom and prosperity, and their uprising is legitimate and necessary to achieve their rights.

“I hope to see the victory of the people and the overthrow of this tyranny ruling Iran soon,” she said.

Badri Hosseini Khamenei called on the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to “lay down their weapons as soon as possible and join the people before it is too late”.

She lamented that “due to physical ailments” she was unable to take part in the protests.

“My brother does not listen to the voice of the people of Iran and wrongly considers the voice of his mercenaries and money-grabbers to be the voice of the Iranian people.

“He rightly deserves the disrespectful and impudent words he uses to describe the oppressed but brave people of Iran,” she wrote.

Khamenei niece’s arrested after comparing uncle to Hitler

On 27 November, Iranian authorities arrested Badri Hosseini Khamenei’s daughter Farideh Moradkhani after she recorded a video describing the authorities led by her uncle as a “murderous and child-killing regime”.

Moradkhani urged the global community to cut ties with Iran over the officials’ crackdown on protesters.

Her brother Mahmoud Moradkhani wrote on Twitter that she was arrested on Wednesday after going to the office of the prosecutor following a summons.

In a video, Moradkhani who had been a critic of her uncle called on people to urge their governments to stop “supporting the Iranian regime.”

Her name is Farideh Moradkhani – she is the niece of the Islamic Republic’s leader, Ali Khamenei.

She likens him to Hitler, Mussolini & Ceaușescu.

She also compared Khamenei to dictators like Nazi Germany’s Adolf Hitler and Fascist Italy’s Benito Mussolini as well as Iraq’s Saddam Hussein.

Khamenei’s sister Badri fell out with her family in the 1980s and fled to Iraq at the peak of the war with Iran’s neighbour.  She joined her husband, the dissident cleric Ali Tehrani who was born Ali Moradkhani Arangeh.
