International Day of Older Persons: History, significance and all you need to know

With an aim to raise awareness on the impact of an aging population, every year 1 October is marked as the International Day of Older Persons.

In a bid to ensure the need that people can grow old with dignity, the day aims to elevate consciousness about points that are affecting the aged population, including senescence and elder abuse. There is no denying the fact that older people make a huge contribution to society.

Whether it is through their guidance, transmitting experience and knowledge, or volunteer work, the contribution made by them can’t be paid back, and therefore they surely deserve a day that celebrates them. Hence, the International Day of Older Persons not only honours but also respects the contribution of older people to building society.

History

From helping their families with caring responsibilities to nurturing the young generations, society has benefited from them in many ways. In its resolution 45/106, the United Nations General Assembly on 14 December 1990 designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons.

This after the World Assembly on aging adopted the initiatives like the Vienna International Plan of Action on aging by 1982 and later that year was also endorsed by the UN General Assembly.

However in 1991, in its resolution 46/91, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons. As a response to the opportunities and challenges of population aging in the 21st century, the Second World Assembly on Aging in 2002 adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on aging. This was also done in a bid to promote the development of a society for all ages.

Significance

This special day for older people holds immense importance as it highlights the challenges of aging, including health issues and elder abuse. The International Day of Older Persons also aims to highlight the contributions of the elderly population to our society. Every year the day is celebrated under different themes, which highlights the important aspect of the day. This year, the day is celebrated under the theme of Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.

Last year, the day was celebrated under the theme Digital Equity for All Ages, which stressed the need for elder people to be active in the digital world. According to the United Nations, the elderly population in the least developed nations are, for the most part, not getting proper access to the digital world.

End of an era as UK & the world bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth II at historic funeral

New Delhi: Royalties and leaders from across the world as well as tearful mourners lining the streets and gathered around screens bid a final farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, as UK’s longest-serving monarch was laid to rest in a historic funeral ceremony conducted to military precision at a scale never seen before.

The Queen’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, bringing to an end public mourning for the monarch.

The “second Elizabethan age” was symbolically brought to a close when the highest-ranking official in the royal household, Lord Chamberlain Andrew Parker, broke his wand of office.

The “instruments of state” with which she was crowned in 1953 — the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre — were removed from the coffin and placed on the high altar.

Her eldest son and successor, King Charles III, placed The Queen’s Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier of Guards on the coffin.

As the coffin was lowered, a lone piper played a haunting lament.

The queen’s titles were read publicly for the last time: “The late Most High, Most Mighty, and Most Excellent Monarch, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, and Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.”

Earlier, the UK observed a two-minute silence in a poignant nationwide tribute at the conclusion of a majestic state funeral ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, attended by thousands and witnessed by millions on screens worldwide.

In the congregation of around 2,000 made up of world leaders, royalty from the UK and overseas and community leaders, India was represented by president Droupadi Murmu and foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra.

The final journey

The UK’s National Anthem, God Save the King’, rang out as the coffin was lifted out for the last leg of the journey to the late monarch’s final resting place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, where a Committal Service concluded the public-facing aspect of the funeral before a private burial ceremony on Monday evening.

The Queen will be buried next to her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip who passed away in 2021, in Windsor in a private ceremony.

Earlier in the day, the state funeral began as chimes of the Big Ben fell silent and hymns rang out as the coffin of the late monarch was carried into Westminster Abbey on Monday morning.

Big Ben, the iconic London landmark housed in the Elizabeth Tower named after the late Queen, tolled every minute 96 times to mark each year of the late sovereign’s life as a procession led by King Charles III entered the historic 11th century Abbey.

The coffin, draped with the Royal Standard, was adorned with flowers from the King’s royal homes and a personal note “in loving and devoted memory” from him and the Instruments of State made up of the diamond-encrusted Imperial State Crown and the orb and sceptre which were gifted to the Queen at her coronation in the same Abbey in 1953.

The hour-long service included a collection of traditional hymns and new pieces of choral music, created especially for the occasion.

Lessons from the Bible were read by Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland and British PM Liz Truss, following which came the hymn, The Lord’s My Shepherd’ which had also been sung at the wedding of the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947.

As the clock struck 11am local time, the Queen’s eldest son and heir Charles followed the coffin which had been Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall since last Wednesday in solemn procession, accompanied by his sons Princes William and Harry and siblings Princess Anne and Princes Andrew and Edward.

William’s children, nine-year-old Prince George and seven-year-old Princess Charlotte were among the youngest members of the royal procession, who walked between their parents the Prince and Princess of Wales.

There was military precision in the ceremony following days of rehearsals by the nearly 6,000 armed forces personnel involved in the grand ceremony.

The coffin was then borne in procession in the state gun carriage used for royal funerals towards Wellington Arch in central London to be taken by the state hearse to Windsor.

The event was watched by millions of people across the UK and around the world. Thousands lined streets and gathered in parks around the capital to listen to the service, with many moved to tears.

It was the UK’s first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s in 1965 and the biggest ceremonial event since World War II.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, passed away at her Scottish residence of Balmoral Castle on 8 September.

Queen Elizabeth's Death: King Charles pledges lifelong service as he remembers 'darling mama' in first address to UK

New Delhi: In his first address to the UK as monarch on Friday, King Charles III vowed to “uphold constitutional principles for the rest of his life.”

“The role and the duties of Monarchy also remain, as does the Sovereign’s particular relationship and responsibility towards the Church of England – the Church in which my own faith is so deeply rooted,” he said in a televised address.

“In that faith, and the values it inspires, I have been brought up to cherish a sense of duty to others, and to hold in the greatest respect the precious traditions, freedoms and responsibilities of our unique history and our system of parliamentary government,” he added.

King Charles said that his mother Queen Elizabeth II’s dedication and devotion “as a sovereign never waivered” with changing times during her seventy-year long reign.

The Queen was UK’s longest-serving monarch.

“In her life of service we saw that abiding love of tradition, together with that fearless embrace of progress, which make us great as Nations. The affection, admiration and respect she inspired became the hallmark of her reign,” he said.

He also paid a tribute to his late father Prince Philip.

“And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you,” he said.

King Charles also announced a new role for his heir-apparent Prince William.

William & Kate become new Prince and Princess of Wales

He said that William and his wife Kate have become the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

For his younger son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle who reliquished their title as senior royals, Charles said that he “wants to express his love for the couple as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Harry & Meghan had shifted to the US.

Earlier in the day, King Charles and his wife Queen Consort Camilla well-wishers as they arrived at Buckingham Palace in London.

Charles became the King immediately after his mother’s demise on 8 September. His formal coronation will take place on Sunday.

King Charles to be officially proclaimed as Britain’s new monarch

After the passing away of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday, King Charles will be officially proclaimed as Britain’s new monarch at a meeting of the Accession Council at St James’s Palace on Saturday. The 73-year-old King Charles has boarded a plane to London and will be proclaimed at Accession Council tomorrow at 10 am tomorrow in the State Apartments of St James’s Palace, said Buckingham Palace.

King Charles was by his mother’s side at her beloved Scottish Highlands home as her health deteriorated, will return to the capital to hold his first audience with Prime Minister Liz Truss as king, before he addresses the nation on television at 6 pm, reported Sky News.

King in grief

Dressed in a black suit and tie, the grieving King, left Balmoral this afternoon seated in the back of a car, with his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, in the front passenger seat, as they were driven in convoy to the airport. He stepped out carrying a bundle of papers and stopped to shake hands and spend time chatting to staff in the rain, before leaving on a plane bound for London, reported Sky News.

The couple spent the night at Balmoral following the death of the 96-year-old monarch, who he described as a “cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother”. Following news that the Queen’s health was deteriorating, other senior royals also rushed to be by her side, including the next in line to the throne, Prince William.

His brother Prince Harry, was the first to leave the Royal Family’s Scottish residence this morning and boarded a British Airways flight from Aberdeen to London after he had travelled to Scotland alone.

Prince William did not join his father in journey back to London, as per royal protocol

Prince William did not join his father, as it is a royal protocol that the monarch and heir to the throne do not travel together, reported Sky News.

He, Princess Royal, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Prince Andrew remain in Scotland. Senior royals will have duties to perform in Scotland in the coming days when the Queen’s coffin begins its journey back to the capital.

King Charles III acceded to the throne immediately following the death of Elizabeth II on Thursday, and described losing his mother as “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”. During this mourning period, he said he and his family would be “comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held”.

The new monarch – born Charles Philip Arthur George – became heir to the throne at the age of three, a title he would hold for 70 years.

Formal process of proclaiming King will be carried out by the Accession Council

Charles has been preparing to be King his entire life and has chosen to use his Christian name for his title as monarch, just like his late beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The formal process of proclaiming him King will be carried out by the Accession Council – a group made up of Privy Counsellors, Great Officers of State, the Lord Mayor of London, Realm High Commissioners and senior civil servants. It is split into two parts. The first approves various consequential orders including the arrangements, without the King present.

The second involves the King holding his first Privy Council, making his declaration and reading and signing an oath to uphold the security of the Church in Scotland (as unlike in England, Church and State are separate there) and approve orders which facilitate continuity of government.

Tanzanian content creators Kili and Neema Paul join the 'Kala Chashma' bandwagon

If we talk about one song that has currently made people across the globe shake a leg, then Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra’s Kala Chashma will wear the crown. Travelling across continents, the trend even made international stars like Demi Lovato and Jimmy Fallon groove to it. Now it seems that the Kala Chashma fever has even affected Tanzanian social media influencers, Kili Paul and Neema Paul.

While the content creators are well known for their lip-syncing videos on iconic Bollywood tracks, it appears that Kala Chashma forced them to join in the trend.

Dropping their version of the Kala Chashma, Kili and Neema took to their official Instagram account to share the video. In the now-viral video, the internet sensations can be seen grooving to the song, sung by Amar Arshi.

Following the trend, the video opens by showing Kili entering with the support of a stick, but falls down and starts shaking his torso. While Neema forgot her steps midway, Kili just nailed it with his perfect grip on the peppy beat. He even went on to do the hook step of the song. While sharing the video, he wrote in the caption, “Neema couldn’t keep up but love this.”

Apart from being flooded with laughing and red heart emoticons, innumerable social media users praised the duo for their performance. There were many who responded to Kili’s caption and complimented Neema for attempting the trend. Their entertaining video was even acknowledged by Australian rules footballer Akec Makur Chuot, who took to the comments section and wrote, “Future movie stars”

One user commented, “Still the energy she is trying to match is commendable...God bless you both.” Another remarked, “M obsessed with this song. Where’s the dark sunglasses”. A third user commented, “Great, Love you bro.” Talking about the song’s energy, one person wrote, “If you can sit still to this…You’re dead.”

International Day of Charity 2022: History and Significance; all you need to know

Every year on 5 September, people around the world observe the International Day of Charity to mark the death anniversary of Mother Teresa. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her efforts in the fight against poverty and suffering.

Like the concepts of volunteerism and philanthropy, charity fosters genuine social bonds and helps build inclusive resilient societies. It can mitigate the worst effects of humanitarian disasters and add to existing public services in child welfare, housing, education, and health care. Additionally, it spreads the idea of humanity in times of conflict and advocates for the rights of the marginalized and underprivileged communities.

History of International Day of Charity:

Mother Teresa became an emblem of Christian generosity as a result of her work with Kolkata’s impoverished people. It made her an instantly recognizable figure around the world. In 1950, the celebrated nun established Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, which rose to prominence for its assistance to the poor. The great personality passed away on 5 September 1997, at the age of 87. The International Day of Charity was first marked by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

Significance of International Day of Charity:

International Day of Charity was created with the intention of educating and inspiring individuals, NGOs, and other stakeholders from all corners of the globe to engage in charitable and volunteer work. Later, the event also tied in with the ideas espoused by the 2015 United Nations Sustainable Development Summit. The summit called for bridging the wealth gap between nations and providing poor countries with financial assistance. The main motto was to fulfill all the sustainable development goals by 2030.

This special day encourages all NGOs and volunteer groups to carry out charitable endeavors. Every year, Mother Teresa’s followers assemble at her grave in Kolkata on her death anniversary for special prayers and thanksgiving, as well as to lay floral tributes and light candles.

Dharma Files | On sharing one’s faith: Varieties of ecumenism

The history of the interfaith movement provides enough material to enable us to distinguish among degrees of sharing. Each mode seems to involve a greater measure of sharing, at least from one point of view. The first kind may be called the ‘Vatican view’ of sharing, for want of a better word. The document, released by the Vatican in 1965, which invited the various religions to join in prayer, distinguished carefully between: i) coming together to pray, and ii) coming to pray together. The document clarified that the Vatican was inviting faiths to come together and then pray according to their own rites; they were not being invited to come and pray together — in some form of common prayer acceptable to all.

Such a mode of sharing one’s faith maintains faith distinctions maximally even as the faiths come together.

A second mode of sharing one’s faith may be described by the expression: ‘religious participation’. In this mode of sharing, one participates in the rites and rituals of other faiths consistently with one’s own beliefs. For instance, a Muslim may visit a Hindu temple but may not bow before the images, which would be inconsistent with the basic tenets of Islam. Similarly, the Hindu may share in the iftar at Ramzan, but may not partake of the meat dishes if he or she happens to be a vegetarian.

A third mode of sharing faith involves a greater degree of participation over the second, just as the second did over the first. In the first, one comes together to pray but not to pray together; in the second, one goes further, and participates in one another’s prayers or rituals consistent with one’s own belief. The third form of participation might take the form of joint prayers, in which passages from various traditions are recited together at the same prayer meeting. Such anthologised prayers, read in the presence of the ministers of the various faiths, would carry the degree of participation a step forward.

This form of ecumenical sharing was popularised by Mahatma Gandhi, whose prayer meetings typically included the recitation of passages from the various scriptures of the world. This mode of sharing has been an important feature of the Hindu renaissance in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It can be traced back to the collection of passages from various parts of the Hindu scriptures, which were selected by Debendranath Tagore (1817-1905) for use in his gatherings. This practice soon went beyond Hinduism, and insightful passages from the scriptures of other world religions came to be included in due course. In one case, when the refugees, who had come to India from Pakistan objected to the reading of a passage of the Qur’an at Gandhi’s prayer meeting in Delhi, Gandhi had the relevant passage from the Qur’an translated into Hindi. The effect was palpable; for a moment the objection disappeared. But as soon as the recitation in the original Arabic was resumed, the protest started again, and Gandhi insisted that either passages from all scriptures in their original form were to be recited, or none.

The sentiment underlying these modes of participation could become progressively more refined. For instance, one might begin one’s participation in ecumenism with the sentiment that one looks upon all religions with an equal eye; that one looks upon all of them impartially. This position could be represented with the term sarva-dharma-sama-bhāva.

Even in becoming a votary of ecumenism, one could characterise one’s attitude as looking upon all religions of the world as equally ennobling — all of them being morally inspiring in a spiritually salvific sense. This attitude could be described as sarva-dharma-sad-bhāva — or goodwill towards all religions, which is a step more advanced than merely looking upon all religions as equal in a neutral way.

If one advances further, then one might come to a stage where one considers oneself inheriting all the religious traditions of humanity equally, and not just one’s own. This attitude could then be described as sarva-dharma-mama-bhāva.

It might be reasonable to close this meditation on forms of ecumenism by invoking a suggestive trichotomy from Hinduism: sattva, rajas, and tamas This trichotomy seems to possess the merit of categorising the whole range of interaction among religions.  Sattva stands for what is subtle and refined, rajas for vigour and competition, and tamas for what is inert and stolid. In terms of this trichotomy, interaction among the religions, characterised by discord and conflict, could be described as characterised by tamas. Similarly, the relationship among religions characterised by active interaction and competition –– in the positive sense of the word –– may be described as having the nature of rajas. And interaction among religions at the level of mutual understanding and accord, would then be distinguished by the quality of sattva.

As the honourable Charles Carrol Bonney declared at the opening session of the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, on 11 September 1893, “We meet on the mountain height of absolute respect for the religious convictions of each other…”

This is a charming metaphor, especially if we consider that the mountain heights are often covered in mist, suggesting thereby the somewhat concealed nature of the ultimate reality we all talk about, and also suggesting that, as we move up the mountain of spiritual progress, differences seem to appear less important.
