This time, the agency claimed, a military group of 25 people led by the Russian special services was captured near the Slovakia-Hungary border. Their goal was the physical elimination of the Ukrainian president.

Zelensky has been claiming that he is Russia's "target number one" since Ukraine woke up to a pre-dawn Russian invasion on 24 February. He had also warned citizens about Russian saboteur elements who had entered Kyiv and were looking for him and his family.

The Ukrainian president has so far survived three assassination attempts since the Russian invasion began according to The Times. The plots were foiled after Ukrainian officials were alerted about them.

The report had claimed that two different outfits were roped in to eliminate Zelensky. The outfits comprised the mercenaries of the Kremlin-backed Wagner group, a mercenary outfit made up of Russian ex-soldiers and suspected of war crimes across the globe, and the Chechen special forces.

However, presidential adviser Mikhail Podolyak had told the outlet Ukrainian Pravda that the president has survived more than a dozen assassination attempts in the first two weeks of the war — and still remains Russia’s “main target.”

“We have a very powerful network of intelligence and counterintelligence, they track it all,” he said.

But even then Zelensky has remained defiant, to an extent he revealed his address in a video.

The development comes on a day when the Ukrainian president said the country is prepared to declare its neutrality and consider a compromise on contested areas in the country’s east, ahead of another round of talks set for Tuesday on stopping the fighting. But he said only a face-to-face meeting with Russia's leader can end the war.

Zelensky also stressed that Ukraine's priority is ensuring its sovereignty and its “territorial integrity” — preventing Russia from carving up the country, something Ukraine and the West say could now be Moscow's goal.

But Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday that the two presidents could meet, but only after the key elements of a potential deal are negotiated.

“The meeting is necessary once we have clarity regarding solutions on all key issues,” Lavrov said in an interview with Serbian media. He accused Ukraine of only wanting to “imitate talks,” and said Russia needs concrete results.

In an overnight video address to his nation, Zelensky said Ukraine is seeking peace “without delay.”

While saying “Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are beyond doubt,” Zelensky also suggested compromise might be possible over the Donbas, the predominantly Russian-speaking eastern region of Ukraine where Moscow-backed rebels have been fighting a separatist war for the past eight years. With its forces bogged down elsewhere, Russia said days ago that its focus is now on securing the Donbas.

Zelensky also said that a peace agreement would have to be put to a referendum of Ukrainian voters, but that Russian troops would have to withdraw from the country first.

“A referendum is impossible in the presence of troops. No one will consider the referendum results legitimate if there are foreign troops on the country’s territory," he said.

Zelensky said that a possible compromise could see Russia pull back its troops to areas where they had been before the invasion started on 24 February.

“I realise that it’s impossible to force Russia to fully leave the territory. It could lead to World War III. I understand completely. I’m fully aware of it," he said. "That is why I’m saying, yes, this is a compromise: Go back to where it all started and then we’ll try to resolve the issue of Donbas, the complex issue of Donbas.”

It was not clear how a compromise on the Donbas would square with maintaining Ukraine's territorial integrity, and Russia and Ukraine remain far apart on other issues.

Bangladesh observes 'one-minute blackout' to mark 'Genocide Day' today

Bangladesh observed a 'one-minute blackout' on Friday to mark 'Genocide Day', in memory of the three million people killed by Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War.

The 'blackout' was observed for one minute from 9:00 pm to 9:01 pm across the country. No lighting was allowed at all the government, semi-government, autonomous organisations, and private buildings and installations at the time.

According to the official, key point installations (KPIs) and emergency installations was exempted from the blackout program, as Dhaka Tribune had reported.

Recently the Paris-based think tank The Center of Political and Foreign Affairs brought out a report titled 'East Pakistan Genocide: Still Yearns for Global Acknowledgement' in which the author Mario de Gasperi explained that the Bangladesh genocide is considered to be the largest and longest since it covers the entire length of the nine-month-long liberation war of Bangladesh.

"Ironically the Bangladesh genocide remains unrecognised while other genocides in Europe and Africa have been acknowledged," Gasperi wrote.

On 25 March, 50 years back Pakistan Army launched 'Operation Searchlight' resulting in the worst genocide in human history over a period of nine months till the Army was defeated, Gasperi wrote.

Gasperi further said, "The Liberation War in erstwhile East Pakistan marked by the horrific genocide committed by the Pakistani Army and razakars, or collaborators, is not acknowledged widely even to this date."

Meanwhile, on Friday, speakers at an international conference held on Thursday titled, 'Bangladesh: Justice after genocide' held at Leiden University in the Hague — organised by Europe based Bangladeshi diaspora organisation European Bangladesh Forum (EBF) in collaboration with the Leiden University UNICEF Student Team the Hague & SESA (Southeast and South Asian) Club by CIROS (Community of International Relations and Organisations Students) — demanded international recognition of the Bangladesh genocide.

EBF has also been holding a two-day long demonstration in front of the historic 'Broken Chair' at the UN building in Geneva, Switzerland since Thursday. The demonstration is being organised in collaboration with the International Human Rights Commission Bangladesh, Geneva. The demonstration will reiterate the demand for trial of the perpetrators responsible for the genocide in Bangladesh and international recognition of the 1971 genocide committed by the Pakistan army.

Bangladesh started observing 25 March as 'Genocide Day' in 2017.

'Focus on stopping hostilities': India abstains from voting on UNGA resolution moved by Ukraine

United Nations: India on Thursday abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution by Ukraine and its allies on the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn eastern European country, saying the focus should be on cessation of hostilities and on urgent humanitarian assistance and the draft did not fully reflect New Delhi's expected focus on these challenges.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a new non-binding resolution that demanded an "immediate" halt to Russia's war in Ukraine. The 193-member UN General Assembly adopted the draft resolution 'Humanitarian consequences of the aggression against Ukraine' by Ukraine and its western allies, with 140 nations voting in favour, five against and 38 abstentions. India abstained on the resolution.

"We firmly believe efforts at the United Nations should contribute to de-escalation of the conflict, facilitate immediate cessation of hostilities to promote dialogue and diplomacy and bring together parties to find an immediate end to the suffering of the people," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in the Explanation of Vote after the resolution was adopted.

"We continue to underline the need to respect the UN Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. India abstained on the resolution since what we require now is to focus on cessation of hostilities and on urgent humanitarian assistance. The draft resolution did not fully reflect our expected focus on these challenges," Tirumurti said, reiterating India's call for immediate ceasefire.

Tirumurti underlined that India continues to remain deeply concerned at the ongoing situation which has rapidly been deteriorating since the beginning of the hostilities. He noted that the conflict has resulted in death of civilians, and nearly 10 million people have either been displaced internally or moved to neighboring countries.

"We have constantly called for cessation of hostilities," he said, noting with concern that the humanitarian situation continues to worsen, particularly in the conflict zones in urban areas.

"Women, children and elderly are disproportionately affected by the prolonging of this conflict," he said.
Tirumurti emphasised that there is an urgent need to address the humanitarian needs of the affected population.

India supports the initiatives of the UN and its agencies and expressed hope that the international community will continue to respond positively to the humanitarian needs of the people of Ukraine, including through extending generous support to the Secretary General's flash appeal and the regional refugee response plan on Ukraine.

He underscored that it is important that humanitarian action is always guided by the principles of humanitarian assistance, which is humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. "These measures should not be politicized."

Tirumurti told the General Assembly that India has already sent over 90 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, including medicines and other essential relief material, to Ukraine and its neighbors as part of the nine separate tranches of humanitarian assistance delivered so far.

India is in the process of sending further supplies in the coming days. He also said that India has ensured the safe return of about 22,500 Indians from Ukraine through the Operation Ganga involving 90 flights.

"We have also assisted nationals from 18 other countries in that process. We are deeply appreciative of the facilitation rendered by the authorities of Ukraine and its neighbouring countries and ensuring their safe return."

A rival resolution was also proposed in the UNGA by South Africa Humanitarian situation emanating out of the conflict in Ukraine'. It made no mention of Russia and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties in the conflict.

Following objections by Ukraine, the assembly voted to decided whether action should be taken in the UNGA on the South African-led draft resolution. With 67 member states voting against, 50 in favour and 36 abstentions, the resolution, supported by China, was not put for vote and no action was taken on that draft. India abstained on this vote as well.

On Wednesday, India, along with 12 other UN Security Council members, had abstained on a resolution by Russia on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The UNSC resolution failed to pass as it did not get the required 9 yes votes. Only Russia and China voted in favour of the UNSC resolution.

The draft resolution on Ukraine in the General Assembly demands an immediate cessation of the hostilities by Russia against Ukraine, in particular of any attacks against civilians and civilian objects; demands that civilians, including humanitarian personnel, journalists and persons in vulnerable situations, including women and children, be fully protected and also demands that all parties protect civilians fleeing armed conflict and violence, including foreign nationals, notably students, without discrimination, to allow voluntary, safe and unhindered passage.

The resolution recognised that the military offensive of the Russian Federation inside the sovereign territory of Ukraine and its humanitarian consequences are on a scale that the international community has not seen in Europe in decades and reiterated the call of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Russia to stop its military offensive, as well as his call to establish a ceasefire and to return to the path of dialogue and negotiations.

The resolution also recalled its demand that the Russian Federation immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

When the 11th Emergency Special Session was opened on 28 February, the UN General Assembly had on 2 March adopted a resolution titled Aggression against Ukraine' that had overwhelmingly condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and demanded that Moscow completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine.

India had abstained on the resolution, which was co-sponsored by 96 UN Member States and received 141 votes in favour, a total of 34 abstentions and five nations voting against.

Pakistan no-trust vote: SC directs govt to protect state institutions after Imran supporters storm Sindh House

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Saturday asked the government to protect state institutions a day after supporters of the ruling party allegedly attacked the Sindh House in Islamabad. The court also issued notices to four political parties in connection with a petition seeking the apex court’s intervention to prevent “anarchy-like” situation ahead of the no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

On the other hand, Khan's Tehreek-i-Insaf party on Saturday issued show-cause notices to its dissident lawmakers for alleged defection and sought an explanation from them by 26 March as to why they may not be declared defectors and disqualified as a member of the National Assembly.

Here's are the top developments ahead of the crucial no-trust vote against Khan:

Storming of Sindh House

Irate PTI members on Friday stormed into the Sindh House in Islamabad in protest against the two dozen dissident lawmakers who were lodged at the Pakistan Peoples Party-run facility.

Television footage showed dozens of PTI activists barging into the Sindh House and chanting slogans against the group of estranged lawmakers.

Fortunately, no harm came to the lawmakers as the Sindh police deployed inside succeeded to keep the intruders at bay until the personnel of Islamabad police arrived at the spot to control the situation.

At least a dozen people were arrested, including the two ruling lawmakers identified as Atta Ullah and Faheem Khan, who allegedly incited the workers to attack the building and damage its gate.

Why is Sindh House a target

Nearly two dozen disgruntled PTI lawmakers have openly threatened to vote against Khan on the no-confidence motion tabled in Parliament by the Opposition. They have been staying at the Sindh House. It is a property of the Sindh government and run by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Saeed Ghani, a provincial minister and spokesman of the Sindh government, said the lawmakers fear they will be abducted by the government.

Supreme Court's response

The apex court directed the Islamabad inspector general of police on Saturday to submit by Monday a report on the storming of Sindh House. It said hearings on the petition would be conducted on a daily basis.

A two-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Munib Akhtar, heard the petition by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to prevent “anarchy-like” situation.

The SCBA earlier this week approached the apex court, seeking its intervention for peaceful proceedings of the no-confidence vote. It was initially to be heard on Monday but was taken up earlier due the attack on Friday on the Sindh House, which sparked an outrage.

During the hearing, the Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan briefed the bench about the attack.

When Khan said that police had arrested some protestors who were later on released by a magistrate, Chief Justice Bandial said: “We are not concerned with what is happening. We are here for the Constitution’s implementation.” He also asked the attorney general if an attack on the public property was a bailable offence. After not getting a satisfactory response, he remarked that it was the duty of the government to protect institutions.

“Public property and national institutions were threatened (on Friday). Members (of Parliament) and institutions should be protected in accordance with the Constitution,” he said.

The attorney general while arguing on the issue of freedom of speech agreed that there was no justification for the violence. Later, the court directed the Islamabad IG to submit on next hearing a report on the storming of the Sindh House.

The apex court also observed that it would not interfere in political matters but would look into the legal matters. “All political parties will act in accordance with the law. They should not take any action which is against the law,” the chief justice said.

The bench also directed that the process of the no-confidence vote should continue under Article 95.

The chief justice issued notices to four political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F).

It also transpired during the hearing that PTI was considering moving the top court to stop its dissidents from voting in the no-confidence move.

PTI's response

PTI on Saturday issued show-cause notices to its dissident lawmakers for alleged defection and sought an explanation from them by 26 March as to why they may not be declared defectors and disqualified as a member of the National Assembly.

According to Dawn newspaper, one of the notices, which has been issued to lawmaker Muhammad Afzal Khan Dhandla, stated: "It is learnt via large-scale broadcast and videos circulated on different forums of media that you have left the parliamentary party of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and joined the Opposition parties, who have brought a motion of vote of no confidence against the honourable prime minister of Pakistan, dated 8 March, 2022."

The notice said the lawmakers had neither denied the contents of the interviews nor issued a rebuttal to this "act of defection".

The lawmakers have been asked to respond to these notices within seven days. The notice cited Article 63 (A) of the Constitution, stating that the provision bounds the lawmakers to follow the directions issued by their parliamentary party.

"You may give a reply to this show-cause notice and have a personal hearing before Mr Imran Khan... on or before 2pm on Saturday, 26 March, 2022," the notice said.

According to Article 63 (A) of the Constitution, a parliamentarian can be disqualified on grounds of defection if he "votes or abstains from voting in the House contrary to any direction issued by the parliamentary party to which he belongs, in relation to election of the prime minister or chief minister; or a vote of confidence or a vote of no-confidence; or a money bill or a Constitution (amendment) bill".

No-trust vote

The political situation in Pakistan has deteriorated after 8 March when the no-trust vote was moved by Opposition parties. Amid acrid statements, violence is feared as already observed on Friday.

The National Assembly session for the no-trust move is expected to be called on 21 March and the voting is likely to take place on 28 March.

Opposition threat

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have warned that if the resolution calling for the no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Khan was not presented in the National Assembly on Monday which is the deadline for tabling the resolution they could stage a "sit-in" in the lower house, thereby hampering a high-profile Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit that is scheduled to take place there on the same day.

Political discomfort

Both government and Opposition politicians have been working overtime to tilt the balance in their favour. The PPP held the meeting of its core committee, followed by the meeting of its leaders with PML-N and JUI-F leaders at a lunch hosted by PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif.

Khan also consulted his core group about the latest situation. He also addressed the groundbreaking ceremony of Rawalpindi Ring Road and told his supporters that the no-trust move would fail.

Khan, 69, is heading a coalition government and he can be removed if some of the partners decide to switch sides.

In the 342-member National Assembly, the Opposition needs 172 votes to remove Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician.

The PTI has 155 members in the House and needs at least 172 lawmakers on its side to remain in the government. The party has the support of 23 members belonging to at least six political parties.

Russia-Ukraine War: No breakthrough in fourth round of talks; Zelenskyy to address US Congress

As the Russia-Ukraine war entered the 19th day on Monday, Moscow and Kyiv conducted fresh talks in an effort to end the devastating war, despite deadly strikes on a Ukrainian television tower, the capital and a pro-Moscow separatist region.

Here are the day's most significant development:

Warring parties

On the 19th day of the invasion, the fourth round of talks made no breakthrough other than a planned resumption on Tuesday, as Russian-backed separatists said fragments from a shot-down Ukrainian Tochka-U missile ripped the centre of Donetsk, killing 23 people.

Moscow called it a "war crime" and rebels published photos of bloody corpses strewn in the street, even as the Ukrainian army denied having fired a missile at Donetsk.

Outside the western Ukrainian city of Rivne, nine people died and another nine were injured on Monday when Russian forces hit a television tower, local authorities said.

Rescuers were working to free survivors trapped under the rubble in the village of Antopil, the head of the regional administration, Vitaliy Koval, said on messaging app Telegram.

As Moscow's military advanced steadily towards several major urban hubs, Russian air strikes killed at least two in Kyiv, now hemmed in on two sides and drained of more than half of its three million residents.

"They say that he is too severely burned, that I won't recognise him," sobbed Lidiya Tikhovska, 83, staring at the spot where a paramedic said the remains of her son Vitaliy lay.

"I wish Russia the same grief I feel now," she said, tears rolling down her cheeks as she clung to her grandson's elbow for support.

During its meeting with Russian representatives, Ukraine said it was demanding "peace, an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops". The videoconference talks paused without a breakthrough ahead of a planned resumption on Tuesday.

"Only after this can we talk about regional relations and about political differences," Kyiv's lead negotiator Mikhailo Podolyak said in a video statement posted to Twitter.

Russian troops not only edged closer to Kyiv but kept up their siege of the southern port city of Mariupol, where officials said nearly 2,200 people have been killed.

At Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, energy operator Ukrenergo said "occupying forces" had once again damaged its electricity supply.

Russia's forces had earlier focused on eastern and southern areas of Ukraine -- home to more ethnic Russians -- but in recent days have moved to the country's centre.

In Kyiv, only the roads to the south remain open, according to the Ukrainian presidency. City authorities have set up checkpoints, and people are stockpiling food and medicine.

The north-western suburb of Bucha is held by Russian forces, along with parts of Irpin, Ukrainian soldiers told AFP. Some blocks in the once well-to-do suburb have been reduced to rubble.

The Russians are encountering resistance from the Ukrainian army to both the east and west of the capital, according to AFP journalists on the scene.

In a new video released on Monday, Zelenskyy said, "Russia continues to destroy our infrastructure, continues to beat our cities. But we will rebuild every street in every city. Every house, apartment of every Ukrainian. Now that the occupier is still on our land, we must beat him as best we can."

It was reported that he will deliver a virtual address to the US Congress on Wednesday.

Global diplomacy

The European Union's foreign policy chief on Monday said the 27-country bloc is finalising its new round of sanctions against Russia for its barbaric invasion of Ukraine.

Josep Borrell said  the fourth package of coercive measures would target Russia's market access, membership in international financial institutions, and steel and energy sectors.

Meanwhile, Russia's finance ministry accused foreign countries of wanting to force Russia into an "artificial default" and said it would meet its debt obligations.

Besides, in a sign Moscow may have underestimated the challenge it would face, US officials told media that Russia had asked China for military and economic aid for the war.

US diplomat Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said Putin reportedly asking for military help could be a "defining moment" for China's Xi Jinping.

Beijing accused Washington of spreading lies over China's role in the Ukraine war, without directly addressing the US media reports.

The UK government on its part is considering housing Ukrainian refugees in property owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs, as it prepared to announce a programme for people to open their homes to those fleeing the war.

Humanitarian crisis

The United Nations estimates almost 2.8 million people have fled Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale land and air assault on 24 February, most of them to Poland.

The UN human rights office said on Monday it had confirmed the deaths of at least 636 civilians in Ukraine through to 13 March, including 46 children. The actual toll is likely much higher, it said, since there have been delays in receiving reports from Kharkiv and Mariupol.

The UN has also decided to allocate a further 40 million dollars from its central emergency response fund to ramp up humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said during a Security Council meeting on the day.

Meanwhile, efforts continued to get help to the devastated southern city of Mariupol, which aid agencies say is facing a humanitarian catastrophe.

In a glimmer of hope for residents of the besieged city, more than 160 civilian cars were able to drive out along a humanitarian evacuation route on Monday.

The successful evacuation followed several failed attempts since Russian forces surrounded the port city on the Azov Sea early this month.

Heavy bombardment has left some 400,000 inhabitants in the city with no running water or heating and food running short.

India

India on Monday called for direct contacts and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to cease the hostilities between the two countries and said New Delhi has been and will continue to remain in touch with both Moscow and Kyiv.

India's deputy permanent representative to the UN Ambassador R Ravindra said India continues to underline the need to respect the UN Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.

Ukrain crisis: At least 1,300 soldiers dead, says Zelensky; fourth round of talks imminent

As the Ukraine-Russia war entered its 18th day on Sunday, the Russian side has said that negotiators were making headway at talks to resolve fighting in Ukraine, while Volodymyr Zelensky has continued to encourage fighters to keep up their morale.

Here’s a look at the all the major developments of the day:

Russian aggression

According to AFP, for the first two weeks of the war, Russia's forces had focused on eastern and southern areas of Ukraine, but in recent days they have moved to the centre, striking the city of Dnipro.

The Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk military airfields in western Ukraine were hit on Friday, while overnight Saturday-Sunday, missiles struck a military training ground in Yavoriv near Lviv, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Poland.

Regional governor Maxim Kozitsky said 35 people were killed and 134 injured in the attack on the base, which had been a training centre for Ukrainian forces with foreign instructors, although the US said the Americans had left.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told ABC News that Russia was "clearly, at least from an air strike perspective... broadening their target sets".

Meanwhile in Kyiv, only the roads to the south remain open and the city is preparing to mount a "relentless defence", according to the Ukrainian presidency.

City authorities have set up checkpoints and stockpiling of food and medicine.

The northwestern suburb of Bucha is entirely held by Russian forces along with parts of Irpin, Ukrainian soldiers at the scene told AFP.

Britain's defence ministry said Saturday that Russian forces were about 25 kilometres from Kyiv and that a column north of the city had dispersed, reinforcing the indication of an attempt to encircle it.

However, the Russians are encountering resistance from the Ukrainian army to both the east and west of the capital, according to AFP journalists on the spot.

Ukrainian soldiers said they believe the Russians have overestimated their resources, in terms of troops and equipment, and underestimated those of their opponents.

"They have to camp in villages in temperatures of nearly minus 10 Celsius at night. They lack provisions and have to raid houses," said one soldier, Ilya Berezenko, 27.

Meanwhile, Russian troops have destroyed 3,687 Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities so far, Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying on Sunday. And “Around 1,300” Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of the invasion, Zelensky said, giving the death toll for Ukraine’s forces for the first time.

Moreover, Russian soldiers arrested Ukrainian mayor, Yevhen Matveyev, head of the city of Dniprorudne in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, according to foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Ukrainian resistance

Zelensky has insisted the Russians will not win, saying in a video address late Saturday that "they do not have such spirit. They are holding only on violence. Only on terror".

Meanwhile as Russia continues to close in on Kyiv a troop of Ukrainian soldiers are keeping up morale by firing a constant barrage of artillery at the Russians. Their shelling has so far stopped Moscow’s tanks entering Kyiv from the east. And they hope that the enemy forces, which have struggled to take large cities, will eventually get bogged down.

Around 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of the invasion, Zelensky said on Sunday giving the death toll for Ukraine’s forces for the first time. While the United Nations said that at least 579 Ukrainian civilians have been killed, stressing that its figures were probably much lower than reality.

A US video journalist was killed and another journalist was injured on the day when they were attacked by Russian forces in Ukraine.

The police force said on its official website that Russian troops opened fire on the car of Brent Renaud and another journalist in Irpin near the capital. It said the injured journalist was being taken to a hospital in Kyiv.

Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of using phosphorus chemical bombs in the eastern Donbas region, while a separate air strike on a monastery sheltering civilians wounded 30.

International law prohibits the use of white phosphorus shells in heavily populated civilian areas but allows them in open spaces to be used as cover for troops.

Oleksi Biloshytsky, head of police in Popasna, around 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Lugansk city, said late on Saturday that Russian forces had used the chemical weapon in his area.

"It's what the Nazis called a 'flaming onion' and that's what the Russcists (amalgamation of 'Russians' and 'fascists') are dropping on our towns. Indescribable suffering and fires," he wrote on Facebook.

It was not immediately possible to verify the comments.

Further south, bombs struck the Sviatoguirsk monastery, where nearly 1,000 civilians were sheltering at the weekend, wounding 30 people, the Ukrainian public prosecutor said at the weekend.

And on Saturday night, a train evacuating people from the Donbas to the western city of Lviv was shelled, according to Donetsk military commander Pavlo Kirilenko.

One person was killed and another wounded, he said.

As for people fleeing Ukraine, almost 2.7 million people have fled the war and more than 100,000 of them in the past 24 hours, the UN said. More than half have gone to Poland.

India

The ministry of external affairs on Sunday announced that the Indian Embassy in Kyiv will be temporarily relocated to Poland due to the deteriorating security situation in the western part of the war-torn country amid Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to review India's security preparedness and the prevailing global scenario in the context of the ongoing conflict.

"The prime minister briefed on the latest developments in Ukraine, including the details of Operation Ganga to evacuate Indian nationals, along with some citizens of neighbouring countries, from Ukraine," according to official sources.

Modi directed that all possible efforts should be made to bring back the mortal remains of Naveen Shekharappa, who died in Kharkiv.

On the other hand, a PIL has been filed in Supreme Court seeking directions on the issue of admission and continuation of studies in the country by Indian medical students recently evacuated from war-hit Ukraine. The plea also sought directions to the Centre to provide a medical subject equivalency orientation programme for admitting them in the Indian curriculum.

Global diplomacy

The UN will have multiple meetings this week about Russia’s war in Ukraine. On Monday, the Security Council will discuss the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Polish foreign minister Zbigniew Rau is expected to speak during the session, one of the diplomatic sources told AFP. Although this is an annual meeting, it will place special focus on the war in Ukraine and will likely see fresh calls for peace.

US President Joe Biden on the day authorised 200 million dollar in additional military equipment for Ukraine. Washington has already authorised 350 million dollar of military equipment – the largest such package in US history.

However, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN on Sunday that Washington had no plans to have US military forces operating in Ukraine, but the United States would defend "every inch" of NATO territory, while increasing assistance to Ukrainian fighters, including through provision of anti-aircraft weapons.

He said the United States and its allies would continue to escalate pressure on Russia and warned that any moves by China or others to provide a lifeline to Russia or help them evade Western sanctions would "absolutely" result in consequences.

Meanwhile Pope Francis issued a plea again for an end to the "massacre" in Ukraine, saying there is no justification for attacks on civilians.

Russian and Ukrainian officials gave their most upbeat assessments yet on Sunday of progress in their talks on the war in Ukraine, suggesting there could be positive results within days. Separately, US deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman said Russia was showing signs of willingness to engage in substantive negotiations about ending a conflict in which thousands have died.

Added to this a fourth round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are likely to be held on 14 or 15 March, said Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to the head of the administration under President Volodymyr Zelensky, as per The Kyiv Independent.

He added that Ukraine is working with Israel and Turkey as mediators to finalise a location and framework for peace negotiations with Russia. “When it is worked out, there will be a meeting. I think it won’t take long for us to get there,” he said on national television.

Public outrage

Since the outbreak of the war on 24 February people across the world have held rallies protesting the invasion. On Sunday, more than 750 people were arrested in cities across Russia for protesting against Moscow’s invasion. According to Al Jazeera, independent monitoring group OVD-Info said police had arrested at least 756 people during demonstrations in 37 Russian cities – with about half of them in the Russian capital Moscow.

It was also reported that Russian troops fired warning shots at peaceful protesters in the southern city of Kherson as thousands held demonstrations.

Anti-war protests were also staged in Warsaw, London and the German cities of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart.

At a time when fear and panic have gripped Ukraine due to conflict with Russia, a middle-aged couple showed remarkable courage by confronting a group of armed Russian soldiers. The incident took place in the village of Voznesensk, in the Mykolayiv Oblast province of Ukraine.

Despite having no weapons in their hands, the couple forced the Russian soldiers to leave their property. The heroic incident was caught on a CCTV camera. Since being posted on 9 March, the clip has gone viral on social media and has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.

In the video, four Russian soldiers are seen breaking into a house in Voznesensk village. Three soldiers then enter the premises, while the fourth one waits outside. Soon after entering, they start looking for Ukrainian soldiers by opening doors and windows.

Minutes later, they were greeted by a gutsy middle-aged couple, who walk up to them without any hesitation. As the man walked out, he shook his fist with anger at the Russian soldier while his wife, who was just behind him shouted at them on top of her voice.

To scare the couple, the Russians then fire a shot in the air but the courageous duo continued shouting at them. The couple then asked them to leave the premises. Soon, the Russian soldiers decided to leave the couple’s house.

To make sure they leave the compound, the Ukrainian couple escorted them to the main gate and even shut the door on their faces.

Ever since the video has been shared on social media, the couple is being lauded for their bravery. Many praised them for their daring act while some hailed them for their undying spirit and courage.

According to National News Agency of Ukraine, Mykolayiv has become the latest target of the Russians. They have used BM-21 "Grad" and BM-27 "Uragan" multiple rocket launcher to attack.
